讚美诗虽然经常被人与宗教、尤其是基督教的崇拜联想在一起，但其实讚美诗也可以是表达某种庄严、歌颂心情的音乐，不一定要和基督教的宗教仪式或祈祷有关。讚美诗这个字源自希腊文，原意就是「讚美歌曲」的意思，所以本来就不一定要和宗教或基督教有关係。英文中讚美诗这个字也常被移用来翻译其他文明的讚美诗，像古埃及或古印度吠达讚美诗在英文都用hymn这个字来表达。最早古希腊人用这个字来称呼歌颂古希腊诸神的歌曲。后来到近代后，宗教音乐的种类越来越多，讚美诗成为专指英国国教相关的简单民谣式宗教音乐，和德国式的圣咏曲、美国式的福音歌曲或灵歌有了区隔，代表了不仅是音乐风格上的差异，也是宗教上的差异。而唱讚美诗的也多半是信奉英国国教或新教的教徒。但近代讚美歌的风格也开始被流行或跨界音乐模仿，出现在专辑和电影中，这时就不再有宗教的意图，但还保有那种庄严、让人肃然起敬的作用。这六张CD一共收录了整整一百首的讚美歌，最主要的演唱者是剑桥大学国王学院合唱团所演唱，他们一共演唱了三片CD中的讚美歌，其中还包括一张全是圣诞节时演唱的讚美歌，所以这一百首讚美歌可以让您从年头听到年尾，整年不同的宗教节庆和气氛中都可以找到讚美歌相伴。
