Although the bel canto repertoire was crucial to Callas's career, and she played a significant part in reviving its fortunes, she never sang any of the roles - from both serious and comic operas - that are represented in this recital. Gramophone said: 'It is extraordinary how the whole quality and colour of Callas' voice changes as she moves from one character to another - for example, from the grand manner appropriate to the Babylonian queen [Semiramide] to the passion of the spoiled Italian duchess [Lucrezia Borgia] and thence to the simple charm of the countrywoman Adina [L'elisir d'amore].'

Maria Callas, the Prima Donna of the Century, recorded this album in 1963-64, for EMI, and was published in 1965. Many critics have regarded it as the "nadir" (in the word of the defunct High Fidelity magazine, in 1974) of her legendary discography. It consists entirely of excerpts from scores she never undertook on stage.
This writer, however, has long found these twilight recordings of Callas rather touching and underestimated. Along with Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti were her greatest composers, and they suited her recalcitrant voice far better than the later scores she undertook.
While, in "La cenerentola," La Callas will not make anyone forget Susanne Marsee's Cinderella, the senior artist's agility is, as always, breathtaking. She also reveals the sadness inherent in Angelina's character. "Guillaume Tell" and "La fille du régiment," though sung in Italian rather than French, are also touching. The anti-heroine of "Semiramide" is the rôle this reviewer, above all other operas, wished she had undertook complete. This singing-actress, with her "bitter" voice and fantastical plastique, would have been ideal in the exotic part.
In our day, only Leyla Gencer and Beverly Sills have been great interpreters of the villainess Lucrezia Borgia, and at least we have this extraordinary excerpt of Callas in this music. To conclude the Disc, we have the diva in a brief excerpt from "L'elisir d'amore."
Other writers have noted a lack of scintillation in these interpretations, and the lugubrious conducting may be at fault. The acuti are consistently shrill, but these high notes are not to be found in the scores composed by the bel canto masters. Callas would have done very well to omit these interpolations, which in any event displace the climaxes carefully notated by the composers. In fact, her 1961 recording of the "Semiramide" cavatina (unreleased until 1992), conducted by Antonino Tonini, is "come scritto," and greatly benefits from such an approach.
