Warner Classics' 40 Most Beautiful Classical Pieces is a double CD of popular excerpts and short selections that are among the most popular in music history. While many of the tracks are soft and lovely melodies that are quite soothing, several others have a strong and powerful character, such as the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, and several other famous works that are more exciting and dramatic than beautiful. Boasting a roster that includes such celebrated artists as Martha Argerich, Maria Callas, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Muti, Maria João Pires, André Previn, and many more, this collection works best as a sampler of their exciting performances, as well as a helpful introduction for beginners.
