Kleemola´s debyt concert in London will include the works by Bach, Aguado, Granados, Ponce, Villa-Lobos and two world premieres by Finnish composers Mikko Heiniö and Harri Suilamo. The six Sonatas for solo violin of Eugène Ysaÿe are essential works in his catalog, inspired by the sonatas and partitas of J.S. Bach, and composed as a tribute to the violinists Joseph Szigeti, Jacques Thibaud, George Enescu, Fritz Kreisler, Mathieu Crickboom, and Manuel Quiroga. These pieces suggest a Janus-like combination of retrospection and the avant-garde, hearkening to the past through allusive figurations and direct quotations (e.g., references in the Sonata No. 2 to Bach's Partita No. 3 and the Dies Irae), but looking to the future in the use of extended violin techniques and novel sonorities. Alina Ibragimova's 2015 release on Hyperion is an absorbing performance, concentrated in tone and accomplished in technique, yet wonderfully ambiguous in expression, in keeping with Ysaÿe's quirky mix of playfulness and high-minded seriousness. Recorded in the concert hall of Wyastone Estate, Monmouth, in May 2014, Ibragimova has great clarity and presence, and the acoustics provide enough resonance to soften the violin's sometimes overly rosinous sound.

YSAŸE Six Sonatas for Solo Violin
Alina Ibragimova has made many fine recordings in recent years, but this solo Ysaÿe disc must count as one of her most memorable achievements. She gives full value to the sonatas’ varied expressive character, their virtuosity, and the imaginative and poetic way Ysaÿe wrote for his instrument. And she makes the music sound quite beautiful: we never feel the medium of unaccompanied violin is at all limiting; the sonatas speak to us unimpeded, without any sense of strain.
Ysaÿe composed the set in 1924, when his illustrious performing career was almost over. He dedicated each of the six to a different colleague among the fraternity of violinists, and we can follow their characteristics through the set – the First Sonata for Joseph Szigeti substantial and serious, and reflecting his prowess as a Bach interpreter; the Third Sonata commemorating the free, romantic style of Enescu, the Sixth Manuel Quiroga’s Spanish heritage, and so on. Ysaÿe sought in all six works to merge the Baroque tradition of solo violin-writing exemplified by Bach with the virtuoso styles of Paganini and Ernst, plus newer ways of writing of his own, leaning towards Impressionism.
At the start of the First Sonata (track 1) we notice Ibragimova’s deliberate, serious approach, characterised by strong dynamic contrasts and a powerful sense of line. The playing here communicates deep emotional involvement; and she’s equally successful in putting over the graceful, amabile character of the contrasting third movement (tr 3).
The Second Sonata, dedicated to Ysaÿe’s close friend Jacques Thibaud, might appear to contradict what we know of the latter’s easy-going nature and graceful playing, suggesting a darker side. The initial skittish quotation from Bach’s Third Partita for Solo Violin is set against obsessive repetitions of the ‘Dies irae’ chant, which continue throughout the sonata. Ibragimova is equally at home in the gentle, muted, melancholic second movement (tr 6) and the finale, ‘Les Furies’, which she attacks with extraordinary gusto (tr 8). Especially memorable here is the reintroduction of ‘Dies irae’ as a barely audible sul ponticello whisper (1'10"), contrasting with fiercely dissonant arpeggios.
With the single-movement Third Sonata, she draws a convincing distinction between the opening in recitative style, done very freely and as though improvised, and the main theme, held at a firm tempo. As the sonata nears its final climax (tr 9, 7'01"), there’s a sense of throwing caution to the wind, accomplished without any loss of tonal quality.
The Fourth Sonata is dedicated to Fritz Kreisler, with more Bachian echoes, as well as a nod to Kreisler’s interest in reviving – or composing in imitation of – more obscure 18th-century composers, with movements entitled Allemande and Sarabande. The first of these has an extremely slow tempo marking, which Ibragimova treats with freedom, allowing the movement’s different facets to come together to make a satisfying narrative. And in the moto perpetuo finale she makes full use of the varied bow strokes indicated (a tribute to Kreisler?), building up once more a cumulative sense of excitement towards the conclusion.
The Fifth Sonata is dedicated to Ysaÿe’s longtime friend and colleague Mathieu Crickboom. Its opening movement, ‘L’aurore’, is an Impressionistic depiction of dawn breaking, which allows Ibragimova to display a fantastic array of the quietest tone colours. She brings infectious rhythmic vitality to the ‘Danse rustique’ that follows.
As well as its Spanish idiom, the Sixth Sonata most clearly shows Ysaÿe as the heir to the great 19th-century virtuoso tradition – he had, after all, been a pupil of Wieniawski and Vieuxtemps. If we think of Ibragimova as a thoughtful, even scholarly player, here she proves herself adept at all the frequent showy tricks. Ysaÿe had a deeper purpose, of course: this piece’s sparkling surface is designed to portray an ardent character, full of extravagant gestures. And not only do the difficulties hold no terrors for Ibragimova, she also, as throughout the disc, gives a strong impression of having fun playing the music.
It seems very sad that none of the dedicatees of the Ysaÿe Sonatas made recordings of them. It may be that though Ysaÿe the great performer and teacher was revered, his compositions were not considered to be significant – it’s only in recent years that a handful of remarkable late chamber works have been unearthed and played. Whatever the reason, the Op 27 sonatas were virtually ignored until the LP era, and then it was individual works, most commonly No 3, that appeared on disc – with fine accounts by Oistrakh, Grumiaux, Rabin and Odnoposoff. Then came the first recordings of the whole set, by Ruggiero Ricci and Oscar Shumsky (whose 1982 performance is particularly commanding).
Since then, dozens of versions have appeared, giving the works the status of classics. Among them, I’ve always admired Leonidas Kavakos’s exceptionally clear, poised account from 1999. Then there’s Thomas Zehetmair, in 2004, playing with magnificent energy and commitment, and a feeling for the music and sense of fantasy that are different from Ibragimova’s but in no way inferior. However, she takes her place now as one of the most distinguished exponents of these fascinating works.

Another wonderful performance

I had previously seen Charlotte Church's concert on PBS this past December but nevertheless was waiting expectantly to see the complete program on DVD and also the bonus features. And it was worth waiting! First I would like to briefly describe the setting of the concert and then give the reasons I liked Charlotte's performance so much.
The event was very classy and formal. Charlotte changed costumes four times during the program. The orchestra, conductor, accompaniment all performed superbly.
Charlotte looked stunning, immaculate, attractive . During her singing, she does these things so well -such as closing her eyes at the appropriate times and using her hands to express the feeling and meaning of the lyrics. Her voice is very melodious and rich in the low tones and rises to the highest pitch when required. She proves she can move from classical to contemporary with the assorted selection of songs which she performed equally well. She is successful because her performances always move her audience emotionally.
Picking out some of the songs chronologically on the DVD, I especially liked "If I loved you". Her emotion overflowed and she sang her heart out with this one. "Carrickfergus" with the piping background music captures the imagination of the audience and soothes and lifts your mind to a peaceful and beautiful place.
The classical pieces such as "A bit of earth", 'The water is wide", "Suo-Gan" ,"The Little Horses"( last two, lullabies) are nicely done as we expected from Charlotte. I find if one looks up the lyrics and translation of such pieces you will understand and enjoy the songs even more.
"Habanera" was nice and charming, showing a few steps of Charlotte's dancing and her singing versatility in French. "The Prayer"with Josh Groban was very romantic and I especially liked the beginning with the expressive, low tones of Charlotte's voice.
"Bridge over Troubled Waters" was excellently done and put the audience in the right mood before "Imagine" which Charlotte dedicated to the victims of the Sept11 tragedy.
She sang Imagine with just the right tone to make it so touching. This brought the house down with so much applause, delight, and appreciation.
The bonuses were great . "Interview with Charlotte" gave us an insight into her music, personality and what she likes to do as a young person. "Aerial Tour of South Wales" did what it says, gave us beautiful panoramic views of ocean, mountains, cliffs, green pastures and the old history of Wales. Accompanying this video, appropriately, was the song The Water is Wide by Charlotte. Finally, "Video Tour of Cardiff With Charlotte" was ably done by Charlotte showing the bay of Cardiff, castles, shopping areas, her girl friend, and aerial views of picturesque Cardiff, where Charlotte was brought up. In the background of this video tour, Charlotte sang the beautiful Carrickfergus.
All together, you will be enchanted by this DVD which deserves the higest marks. It couln't be more perfect.

Vanessa-Mae was just a teenager when her major-label debut, The Violin Player, was released. This may account for her ability to successfully fuse old-world classical styles with a contemporary new age sensibility. She comes out scorching on the Bach classic "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," showing off her world-class talent as a revolutionary violinist. The new arrangements by producer Mike Batt add a flavorful world music appeal that both compliments and showcases her masterful skill. While all ten tracks are performed as instrumentals, Vanessa-Mae manages to squeeze every ounce of passion out of a note, transcending the necessity for lyrics. Her ability to play off of other instruments is brought to the forefront on the final track "Red Hot." She goes toe to toe with a forceful electric guitar and her four-string violin leaves the challenging six-string in the dust. This record will delight those who are bold enough to challenge themselves by listening to a collection of songs that defy standard genre classifications.

RCA -Living Stereo的发烧传奇
世界上没有任何一个录音方式比RCA Victor Living Stereo更能够代表高传真录音的黄金年代。这项傲人的成就由RCA唱片公司的音乐制作人及录音工程师在1950年中期研究开发完成,使得古典乐的录音技术由单声道跃升为立体声音响,并成为永久性的音响革命。这项科技结合了当时最伟大的古典音乐大师和小提琴家海飞兹、钢琴家鲁宾斯坦、克莱本,女高音普莱丝及指挥家莱纳、费德勒等名家的演绎,不但受到消费市场的欢迎,同时也博得专家一致的肯定。Living Stereo将为录音技术带入崭新的时代,并为立体声奠定了无法企及的崇高地位。
Living Stereo的故事
一九五四年,RCA Victor主导并首次在波士顿交响厅试验使用多轨录音方式收录了孟许指挥波士顿交响乐团演奏白辽士的「浮士德的天谴」。这是RCA公司第一次用单声轨及两轨录音带同时作业的录音,这些试验尚包括了一九五四年三月延聘了一组专家在芝加哥的管弦乐厅所作的细部修正。这就是立体立体声音响技术攻占消费市场的滥觞。
当RCA Victor着手多轨录音计划时,唱片制版技术和消费市场的音响播放系统 还是单声道,因此RCA的录音工程师们只好继续使用二轨及三轨设备录制海飞兹、莱纳等大师级演奏家的录音,以期待家用音响能赶得上双声道的时代。一九五五年,立体声录音机终于进入消费市场,同时RCA唱片公司也发行了第一卷立体声音乐带,这种立体声音响带将高传真音响带入新的境界。一九五八年,西方电子公司(Western Elec-tric Company)推出了划时代的立体唱片刻版系统之后,第一部立体声唱机便出现在商店里,同年的稍后,RCA发行了Living Stereo的LP唱片,成为高传真黄金时代的最佳典范。
在当时,Living Stereo是一项艺术和科技的革命。从音乐的角度而言,艺人能够录制一个完整的演奏,而不是仅仅用单声道制造出一个类似演奏的声音。如此一来,指挥家可以体验出乐团和独奏者之间的平衡,并将全部精神放在音乐本身,而不必为了迁就科技的不是而削弱音乐性。

引用This 6-CD set contains 100 tracks from the most familiar and best-loved works by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893), performed by many of the world’s leading instrumentalists, singers, orchestras and conductors.
Tchaikovsky is one of the major composers of the 19th century Romantic era. His music is full of magnificent melodies and is noted for its passion and its sincerity. Many of Tchaikovsky’s themes have been heard in major film soundtracks and TV adverts.
CD 1 begins with the sweeping opening of his 1st Piano Concerto, one of the most familiar works in the classical repertoire. This is followed by extracts from all his other concertos, namely the impressive 2nd and 3rd Piano Concertos, the magnificent Violin Concerto and the charming Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra.
CD 2 includes substantial extracts from Symphonies Nos 3, 4, 5 & 6, which represent the emotional heart of the composer’s entire output.
Tchaikovsky’s three great ballet scores – Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker – contain some of his most inspired music and are represented here on CD 3 by generous highlights from all three works.
CD 4 includes arias and orchestral items from some of Tchaikovsky’s main operas: Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, The Snow Maiden and Mazeppa, together with a representative selection of his songs, including the beautiful ‘None but the lonely heart’.
CD 5 covers chamber and instrumental works, including the famous ‘Andante cantabile’ from his String Quartet No.1 and extracts from the delightful piano suite of 12 short character pieces called The Seasons.
CD 6 presents several of Tchaikovsky’s most popular orchestral pieces, including March slave, String Serenade in C, Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and Capriccio italien. The set ends with a complete performance of the spectacular ‘1812’ Overture.

EMI's six-disc collection of the best of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky touches on all of the essential masterpieces, so anyone who listens to this set will have an advantage over others who settle for a single, barely representative greatest-hits CD. Granted, it has limitations, chiefly in what was picked for the program. Only the Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Variations on a Rococo Theme are presented in their entirety, so almost all of Tchaikovsky's other multipart works are highlighted by just one or two movements. This can give newcomers the false impression that the remaining concertos, symphonies, suites, and other long forms consist only of the named selections. For example, the tracklisting does not indicate that Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker are presented as suites from the much longer ballets. However, once beginners are made aware of these excerpts, the survey can be appreciated as a generous sampler that reveals the great variety of Tchaikovsky's works. Many of the label's exceptional performers are included here: important EMI conductors from the past, such as Thomas Beecham, Herbert von Karajan, and Adrian Boult, are accounted for, as are contemporary maestros like Rudolf Barshai, Mariss Jansons, and Vladimir Fedoseyev; furthermore, the list of instrumentalists and singers includes pianist Mikhail Pletnev, violinist Vladimir Spivakov, cellist Paul Tortelier, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, tenor Nicolai Gedda, and bass Boris Christoff, among many other distinguished musicians. Because the recording dates cover several decades and the reproduction is either ADD or DDD, the sound varies a fair amount over the course of 100 tracks. Yet if this set is regarded as a reasonably comprehensive introduction to Tchaikovsky's music, eventually to be replaced by complete and superior recordings, then listeners will not mind the slight changes in audio quality and will focus instead on the wealth of music and EMI's impressive backlist.

本辑收录48张首度由黑胶转录成CD之重点作品。
钢琴家Ania Dorfmann安妮雅-朵夫曼、俄国小提琴家Leonid Kogan柯岗、意大利男高音Cesare Valletti瓦雷提、重抒情女高音天后Zinka Milanov米兰-诺夫等名家经典录音再现。
这套录音收录了RCA在五零年代后期,以最新的高传真技术发行的经典录音。这一套录音与以往的同系列录音最大的不同在于,当中收录了四十八张LP转录的专辑,皆为首度以CD方式呈现。由此可知,从一九八四年CD问世以来,这些录音都未曾再版过,在这之前可能也已经绝版很久,因此有很多份录音,都可能是六十岁以下的乐迷未曾听过的罕见黑胶再版。比如说教出知名低音大提琴家盖瑞-卡尔(Gary Karr)和艾尔加-梅耶(Edgar Meyer)的低音大提琴家斯图亚特.桑基(Stuart Sankey)与节庆四重奏合作的舒伯特《鳟鱼》五重奏。很少台湾人知道,但五、六零年代在美国音乐界极具权威的女钢琴家安妮雅-朵夫曼(Ania Dorfmann)所弹奏的舒曼。朵夫曼是当时少数能够和指挥大师托斯卡尼尼同台合作和录音的女性钢琴家,出生并成长于俄国的她,十一岁就在俄国举行独奏会,并曾为当时比她小几岁的小提琴大师海飞兹伴奏,十八岁前往巴黎追随巴黎音乐院名教师伊西多-菲利普(Isidor Philipp)习琴,之后返回俄国,到俄国大革命后才又返回巴黎,在欧洲享有十五年知名钢琴家的声望,直到二战爆发才将重心移往美国,成为托斯卡尼尼第一位邀请合作的女性钢琴家。同样罕见的还有俄国小提琴家柯岗(Leonid Kogan),在一九五八年录下的小品集,当中他演奏了德布西《月光》等优美乐曲,以柯岗近年被人怀念的名气甚高,很难想象这份录音直到现在才有机会获得再版。被视为俄国小提琴学派最伟大代表人物的他,因为很少有机会到西方演出,五十八岁早逝再加上一直躲避公众目光,也不受到俄国当局青睐,因此很长一段时间知名度都远在奥伊斯特拉夫(David Oistrakh)之下。这些录音中柯岗使用的是两把价值超过四百万美金的瓜奈里名琴ex-Colin(1726)和ex-Burmester(1733),柯岗也是少数使用钢弦而非羊肠弦的小提琴家,因此让他的录音特别值得珍藏。
同样值得一听的是由意大利男高音瓦雷提(Cesare Valletti)所灌录的意大利艺术歌曲集。他是知名歌唱家史基帕(Tito Schipa)的学生,在五零年与卡拉丝合作罗西尼歌剧而扬名全球,之后卡拉丝与维斯康提、伯恩斯坦合作《梦游女》时也指定与他合作,之后卡拉丝多次的《茶花女》也和瓦雷提合作。他和卡拉丝一九五八年的茶花女演唱被誉为史上此剧最佳演出,这份录音就是在当时录下的。
同样珍贵的还有二十世纪中叶重抒情女高音天后米兰-诺夫(Zinka Milanov)的咏叹调专辑。她是被指挥大师华尔特(Bruno Walter)所发掘,特别推荐给大师托斯卡尼尼,参加他唯一一次在萨尔兹堡演出威尔第安魂曲的演唱。之后托斯卡尼尼重要的电台演出录音也都与她合作。这么重要的女高音,她的独唱录音却一直没机会再版,在此刻首度CD问世,能听到的人可以说是何其幸运,因为这声音可能有超过半世纪失传,直至现今才有机会再度流传于乐迷心中。

Die Kölner Akademie and Michael Willens have previously recorded Mozart’s complete piano concertos with Ronald Brautigam, earning praise for their fresh and colourful contributions to the series. The team now releases the first of four projected discs with further Mozart scores, beginning with two of the composer’s best-loved serenades. Serenades were a characteristic feature of Salzburg musical life: opening with a march and continuing with as many as eight or nine separate movements on an orchestral scale, such works will have been ringing in Mozart’s ears from childhood. Thirteen serenades of varying scope and scorings are included in Mozart’s catalogue of works, and of these the well-known ‘Posthorn Serenade’ is the ninth. It is also the last serenade that Mozart composed before leaving Salzburg for Vienna. The nickname stems from Mozart’s inclusion of a solo for post horn (‘cornodi posta’) in one of the movements, but the wind instruments play an important role throughout the serenade, with extended solos for flute and oboe.
In comparison, Eine kleine Nachtmusik – the last serenade Mozart wrote – is for strings only. It is also shorter than many of the other serenades, and was probably intended for a more intimate occasion. Mozart’s own thematic catalogue lists it as having five movements, but as the first minuet and trio (preceding the slow movement) have been lost, only four are typically performed today. In this recording a minuet from Mozart’s very first string quartet in G major, K. 80, is incorporated by way of completion of the five-movement arch.

Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, a collection of love songs grew up. Under the title of the “Most beautiful of songs”, they found a home in the Old Testament—it was Martin Luther who first gave them the name of “Song of Songs”—and since that time they have inspired and fascinated a vast number of theologians, mystics, philosophers, poets, painters, and, last but not least, composers.
Particularly during the Baroque period, these poetic, sensual, vividly descriptive texts were set over and over again to music, and they inspired librettists to expand on the original texts. Some of the most beautiful settings of the Song of Songs were produced in Germany.
Founded in 1921, The Netherlands Bach Society is the oldest Early Music ensemble in the Netherlands, and possibly in the whole world. Yet along with the musicians, its artistic director Jos van Veldhoven is still continually in search of contemporary ways of presenting this music, whether it be the traditional performances of the St. Matthew Passion in Naarden, other works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) or music by his predecessors, successors, contemporaries and fellow spirits.
Beloved & Beautiful is the fourth cd in a series of songs, carefully chosen and combined because of the themes they represent. The programmes are often compiled in an original way and thus give a refreshing view of the various musical styles from Schütz/Monteverdi to Haydn/Mozart, as well as of the central composer Bach himself. The flexibility of the ensemble makes it possible to perform works from the secular and sacred repertoires in a great variety of combinations of musicians.

引用Of their type, these are mostly very good performances. Rachel Podger draws a generally sweet tone from her instrument despite the gut strings and period bow; she permits herself sufficient vibrato where necessary to give her timbre some body, and she’s very ably accompanied by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The two Haydn concertos come off best, particularly the slow movement of the C major concerto, which is all about the violin–after the opening the entire movement is an aria for the soloist atop simple pizzicato chords. The Mozart is more problematic, not so much because of Podger, but because of Beznosiuk’s occasionally sour-toned viola, particularly in the first movement. This makes passages where the two soloists play together less than ideally alluring, and makes the slow movement less moving that it should be. Sonically, as so often from this label, the engineering is absolutely state of the art, and a joy all by itself.
That said, some four decades into this alleged authenticity business, enough is enough. Yes, Podger manages a decent tone, but compared to the best traditional performances she still sounds effortful. Her registers aren’t entirely even (especially evident when moving into and out of the instrument’s lower range), her ornamentation often sounds timid and routine, her pianissimo phrase-endings sometimes trail off into nothingness, and a beautiful, singing timbre ought not to be an occasional “ornament” but a constant presence. Performers in the Classical period sought these ideals at all times, and if modern instruments and playing techniques helped them to realize them, they would have taken them up with enthusiasm. Indeed, that’s exactly what really happened, isn’t it? The problem is that remedying these defects (for such they are, and at a far deeper level of authenticity than mere issues of “performance practice”) effectively eliminates much of the ballyhooed historicity of the sound. Podger is a good violinist, but it would be very interesting to hear how well she could hold her own against the competition with a normal violin, in this or any other repertoire.

This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Working as I do in one of those Royal highfalutin’ music educational establishments, I’ve become used to receiving commentary on the occasional wobbly heaps of new CDs which arrive and linger on my desk for a day or so. One of the Department of Early Music students immediately fell on ‘the new Rachel Podger’, and told me the story of the special Stradivari instruments used before I’d even had a chance to look at the cover. I’ve played the first fifteen or twenty minutes of this CD more times than I now care to count, merely because that’s the duration of the school run in this rainy autumn season, and hearing the gorgeous opening of the Haydn Violin Concerto in G major I could never bring myself to shove an unsympathetic finger onto the track-skip button and miss out by exploring further, if you get what I mean.
Recordings of Haydn’s violin concerti are not all that common, and my collection has been only fairly recently been provided with the two on this new disc by their inclusion in the marvellous Haydn Complete Symphonies MP3 Edition from Nimbus. With Rainer Küchl as soloist these are fine performances and very well recorded. With a more overtly resonant acoustic they are however not quite as transparent as with this new SACD disc, and Rachel Podger lays into her cadenzas with more gusto, the double-stopping moments 6:48 into the first movement of the Violin Concerto in G major having a wonderful folksy feel. The second Adagio movement is very high quality Haydn indeed, and played here with the utmost sensitivity. I’ve moaned about over-exposed harpsichords in the past, but the continuo is so remote in the energetic final Allegro that it seems to have been banished beyond acceptable bounds. The excellent orchestral strings more than make up for this, but the harpsichord tends to buzz around on the far right rather than contributing much of substance by way of rhythm or harmony. There’s a slightly bumpy edit at 2:08 as well, the beat shifted slightly and delayed by a couple of nano-seconds. Readers should understand we reviewers have to put this sort of thing in just to show we’ve been paying attention, but in fact this has no real impact on what is otherwise a superb recording and performance. While we are on the subject of Haydn I’ll deal with the Violin Concerto in C major, which is another very fine work, the technical demands of which Rachel Podger brushes aside, creating a performance of sheer joyful musicianship and deceptive ease. Podger plays her own Pesarinius violin of 1739 for the two Haydn concerti, and the exquisite high tones of this instrument come across with a marvellously floating, almost ethereal quality at moments throughout the C major concerto. The pizzicato accompaniment of the Adagio, with its shades of Vivaldi, allows the solo line to soar and sing with delightful freedom.
Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante KV364 is justly famous, and the musicians here are against stiffer competition in the catalogues. This recording does however have a unique selling point, a loan of two Stradivarius instruments from the famous collection of my old Royal highfalutin’ musical institute the Royal Academy of Music in London. The violin is the 1699 Crespi, and Pavlo Beznosiuk plays the Castalbarco viola from ca.1720. This was originally made as a viola d’amore which would have had a flat back. The instrument was later converted into a viola by changing this for a swell back, and adding a heavier Amati head. This kind of messing around would appear to disqualify the instrument from being called a true Stradivarius, but the table of the instrument is still one of the finest examples of Stradivarius’s work, and having recorded KV364 Rachel Podger commented on the special resonance the instrument possesses, especially in the upper registers.
Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante KV364 has been oft recorded, and the version I’ve been listening to more often than not has been that of Dominika Falger and Johannes Flieder on the Dux label (see review). I like this for its transparent recording and sensitive playing, but this new recording from Podger and Beznosiuk does bring us to a different plane. Both strung with gut strings, the two solo instruments are beautifully matched, and with both Rachel and especially Pavlo being old friends of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment the whole thing has a feel of lightness and chamber-music synergy which oozes warmth and fun in the outer movements. This is helped with the not-huge acoustic of All Saints’ Vicarage, East Finchley, which is more chapel than church in terms of sonic feel; more English country mansion than Salzburg Schloss, but is not to say that this is a lightweight in terms of dynamic contrast. Take the build-up from the anticipatory opening phrases to where everything takes off at 1:48 into the opening movement and you can hear a really well prepared crescendo.
The minor-key centre to this work is of course that wonderful Andante which is played here with utmost intimacy and the most charmingly poignant phrasing. I’ve listened carefully, and am not entirely convinced the tempo of the opening is kept strictly after the entry of the solo violin, at which it seems to slow ever so slightly. This is another very minor point, so I’ll leave it up to the listener to make up their own mind as to whether they agree. My only reason for bringing it up is that I can’t think of many other criticisms. The orchestral balance is nice: the sometimes difficult intonation with the oboes taken with almost entirely poised refinement. The duet cadenza in this movement sounds like a short but soulful conversation or double monologue; both participants reminiscing on a departed friend - united, but each with their own viewpoint.
The only point remaining is that of taste in terms of the sound qualities of the solo instruments. Some listeners, being used to ‘modern’ instruments with bound rather than gut strings, may be less convinced by the difference in tone with the gut strings. These give a rounder sound, with a different kind of buzz in the timbre, and a different kind of projection due to the shifts in harmonics in the spectrum of the sonic signature of each note. I personally quite like this effect, and it fits with the early-music background of the rest of the orchestra, so to suggest it might have been done differently in this recording would be silly. If you are the kind of person who can’t listen to Mozart on a fortepiano then you might possibly turn your nose up at this equivalent in terms of string sound, but if you are the kind of person who can give yourself over to the narrative in the music and the expressive qualities in the playing rather than throwing up barriers, then you will soon become lost in this performance. The question of vibrato also arises on this topic and yes, the soloists here are restrained in its use but in fact rarely use none at all. It’s not the kind of pumped up vibrato you might find if playing high romanticism, but as any good musician will tell you, the music and the instrument both have a way of informing the style of your playing. This isn’t so much ‘authentic’ playing as has become a dirty word in certain circles, but playing which to my mind seeks the core of the music. Whether or not it the listener believes it has been found will be a personal response, but either way I don’t believe inflexible dogma has anything to do with the results in this recording.
Of the last Presto movement of KV364 Podger says “you hear it and you instantly love it”, though of course partially in its context as a reply to that darker central movement. The orchestral violins love it a little less perhaps, being not entirely together around 8 seconds in, but the tempo is quite a blistering one and the most ‘on the edge’ sounding of the whole disc. This makes for exciting listening however and the music doesn’t sound rushed or out of control. The musical ideas are thrown around with all the entertaining abandon one would hope for, and this entire recording and performance is very satisfying indeed.
Channel Classics’ SACD recording for this release is excellent, with wide ranging dynamics, enticingly deep bass, and toothsome treble especially for the soloists. The surround perspective as is usual with this label separates and creates a greater sense of air around the players, without going in for over-the-top sonic effects, and the straight stereo mix also works very well indeed. With the lean and flexible spirit of an excellent orchestra, top notch solo playing and some of the finest music the classical era has to offer, for what more could a person ask?

卡蒂雅这份录音之所以不同於前人录音之处,在於她把拉赫曼尼诺夫创作这两首乐曲时受到巴哈音乐强烈的对位手法所带来的影响,将巴洛克式的对称作风去除后,改以后浪漫派的不规则入乐,将之与对位结合后,再加进他个人前后两期乐风而呈现出来的处理。这样拉赫曼尼诺夫长久以来一直被人所忽略,尤其是在俄国钢琴家李希特在二十世纪中叶崛起后,那种凭藉天赋体型优势,由肩部到手掌直压在键盘所可以发出的大跨度和弦音色中所无法呈现的。从备受拉赫曼尼诺夫讚许的霍洛维兹詮释中,由下往上的弹奏姿势让他彻底避免由肩膀压迫琴键的和弦弹奏,绝对贯彻以手指发出最完美细腻音色的演奏技术,让他可以实践出拉赫曼尼诺夫第三号协奏曲的对位特色,也是让他受到作曲家本人赏识的原因。
本片中,卡蒂雅无意泡制霍洛维兹的招牌乐风,反而她带来的是更快速、让人兴奋而突显其青春洋溢却也同时才华洋溢的快速乐句弹奏和华丽过门。自十岁起即开始在欧洲各地巡迴演出的卡蒂雅深知,当代乐坛少有几位钢琴家在这方面能够弹得比她出色,更是该极力表现的特长,也因此在近几年卡蒂雅与王羽佳两人同场合奏联弹或独奏时,都充份在技巧和穿著上奋力呈现,展现自己的年轻、美貌和身材,排除古板的批评和眼光,而在艺术展演上大秀光芒,正如此辑两首协奏曲之演绎,崭新亮眼值得乐迷珍藏品味。

For the first time, 2016 ECHO Klassik prize-winner Khatia Buniatishvili has set her sights on the two most popular piano concertos by the late-romantic composer Sergei Rachmaninoff to present what is now only her second concert recording. Following upon her solo albums, such as Kaleidoscope with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an exhibition, Ravel’s La valse and Stravinsky’s Petrushka, Khatia Buniatishvili is now presenting her second concert recording with the famous concertos of Sergei Rachmaninoff. The Second, that tuneful evergreen of 1901, has long been one of the most frequently recorded of all concertos and has left an indelible mark on Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood and popular culture altogether. The much longer and far more difficult Third is one of the heavyweights of the repertoire. Rachmaninoff, an epoch-making pianist, composed it in 1909 for his own well-trained fingers to play on his first tour of the United States. Its dedicatee, Josef Hofmann, refused to touch it, claiming that he lacked the strength and the hand-width to negotiate the widely spaced chords of the absurdly difficult solo part. Now Khatia Buniatishvili, called “The Fearless Virtuoso” in the title story of last year’s BBC Music Magazine, has faced the challenge and recorded the work with the Czech Philharmonic under Paavo Järvi.

本辑收录48张首度由黑胶转录成CD之重点作品。
钢琴家Ania Dorfmann安妮雅-朵夫曼、俄国小提琴家Leonid Kogan柯岗、意大利男高音Cesare Valletti瓦雷提、重抒情女高音天后Zinka Milanov米兰-诺夫等名家经典录音再现。
这套录音收录了RCA在五零年代后期,以最新的高传真技术发行的经典录音。这一套录音与以往的同系列录音最大的不同在于,当中收录了四十八张LP转录的专辑,皆为首度以CD方式呈现。由此可知,从一九八四年CD问世以来,这些录音都未曾再版过,在这之前可能也已经绝版很久,因此有很多份录音,都可能是六十岁以下的乐迷未曾听过的罕见黑胶再版。比如说教出知名低音大提琴家盖瑞-卡尔(Gary Karr)和艾尔加-梅耶(Edgar Meyer)的低音大提琴家斯图亚特.桑基(Stuart Sankey)与节庆四重奏合作的舒伯特《鳟鱼》五重奏。很少台湾人知道,但五、六零年代在美国音乐界极具权威的女钢琴家安妮雅-朵夫曼(Ania Dorfmann)所弹奏的舒曼。朵夫曼是当时少数能够和指挥大师托斯卡尼尼同台合作和录音的女性钢琴家,出生并成长于俄国的她,十一岁就在俄国举行独奏会,并曾为当时比她小几岁的小提琴大师海飞兹伴奏,十八岁前往巴黎追随巴黎音乐院名教师伊西多-菲利普(Isidor Philipp)习琴,之后返回俄国,到俄国大革命后才又返回巴黎,在欧洲享有十五年知名钢琴家的声望,直到二战爆发才将重心移往美国,成为托斯卡尼尼第一位邀请合作的女性钢琴家。同样罕见的还有俄国小提琴家柯岗(Leonid Kogan),在一九五八年录下的小品集,当中他演奏了德布西《月光》等优美乐曲,以柯岗近年被人怀念的名气甚高,很难想象这份录音直到现在才有机会获得再版。被视为俄国小提琴学派最伟大代表人物的他,因为很少有机会到西方演出,五十八岁早逝再加上一直躲避公众目光,也不受到俄国当局青睐,因此很长一段时间知名度都远在奥伊斯特拉夫(David Oistrakh)之下。这些录音中柯岗使用的是两把价值超过四百万美金的瓜奈里名琴ex-Colin(1726)和ex-Burmester(1733),柯岗也是少数使用钢弦而非羊肠弦的小提琴家,因此让他的录音特别值得珍藏。
同样值得一听的是由意大利男高音瓦雷提(Cesare Valletti)所灌录的意大利艺术歌曲集。他是知名歌唱家史基帕(Tito Schipa)的学生,在五零年与卡拉丝合作罗西尼歌剧而扬名全球,之后卡拉丝与维斯康提、伯恩斯坦合作《梦游女》时也指定与他合作,之后卡拉丝多次的《茶花女》也和瓦雷提合作。他和卡拉丝一九五八年的茶花女演唱被誉为史上此剧最佳演出,这份录音就是在当时录下的。
同样珍贵的还有二十世纪中叶重抒情女高音天后米兰-诺夫(Zinka Milanov)的咏叹调专辑。她是被指挥大师华尔特(Bruno Walter)所发掘,特别推荐给大师托斯卡尼尼,参加他唯一一次在萨尔兹堡演出威尔第安魂曲的演唱。之后托斯卡尼尼重要的电台演出录音也都与她合作。这么重要的女高音,她的独唱录音却一直没机会再版,在此刻首度CD问世,能听到的人可以说是何其幸运,因为这声音可能有超过半世纪失传,直至现今才有机会再度流传于乐迷心中。

室内乐(Chamber Music)故名思义,就是在小空间内以小编制独奏乐器群合奏的音乐演出形式。有别於独奏,从两种乐器的二重奏、到九重奏,到小型乐团;合奏乐器的种类从弦乐家族、弦乐与钢琴、钢琴与木管… 变化繁多。从早期的宫廷娱乐发展开始,在形式上确立了室内乐的表演形态,然而除了专业的乐师或是乐手,演出室内乐供上流社会娱乐之外,业餘乐手也经常呼朋引伴至自家或斗室中合奏,自娱娱人,当然,职业乐手也经常这么做。演奏室内乐需要合奏乐手高度的合作默契,是训练合奏技巧、培养音乐情谊的最佳方式。这也就是为何至今除了专业的室内乐团体之外,许多顶尖的独奏家,偶尔也会组合非常态的室内乐合奏团的主要原因。室内乐堪称「独乐乐不如眾乐乐」最贴切的写照。
西洋音乐史上自然不乏室内乐杰作。从巴洛克时代的韦瓦第、巴哈、鲍凯里尼,便留下许多珠玉般的精品。海顿确立了弦乐四重奏的形式,自此成为最受欢迎、最常见的室内乐演出型态,他的弦乐四重奏作品「皇帝」,其中一个乐章就是今日的德国国歌。莫札特时代,室内乐更加奔放,木管开始展现魅力。贝多芬时期,将室内乐的合奏技巧推向令一个更高的境界。浪漫时期的室内乐,回到人的情感面,抒情与内省,兼容并蓄。到了现代,室内乐成为新潮作曲家实验音乐表现可能的最佳捷径。本辑收录的室内乐作品,集结各个时期的曲目精华,以编年的顺序,带领乐友领略室内乐精致友善的完美体验。

I think that Chamber Music is best listened to on headphones and this collection is a magnificent example. The headphones I bought from Amazon were by no means expensive but they have confirmed a lifetime's experience and now bring bliss to this fantastic set of discs. They bring out the intimacy of the studio recording set and the quality of the sound of each instrument. GREAT.

李斯特自称是「既是吉普赛人又是方济教派的修士」,这样复杂而且两面的性格,形成他作为浪漫乐派最具有特色的作曲家的总括,是非常适宜的,他的作品中有一种匈牙利吉普赛人的狂放和无羈,那些纵横於乐曲中的灵感,似乎就是在东欧的森林和田野里驰骋而来的营火和劣酒交错而成的狂闹歌声。
李斯特的作品数量非常庞大,且总类繁多,除了正式的交响曲因为和他的创作精神抵触而未涉猎外(但他还是写有两首作品以交响曲为名)、举凡协奏曲(三首钢琴协奏曲)、歌剧、神剧、艺术歌曲、钢琴独奏曲都留有名作。尤其是钢琴作品,数量更是惊人。他的「超技练习曲」和帕格尼尼主题练习曲(其中就包括著名的「鐘」,是知名的代表作)。与达顾特公爵的夫人相恋让他流亡瑞士意大利边境,激发他写下钢琴名作「巡礼之年」。之后他一度退隐,复出后重回阔别近十年的祖国匈牙利,听到当地的吉普赛人乐团,激发了他灵感,於是写下了近二十首的「匈牙利狂想曲」成为他管弦乐作品中最膾炙人口的杰作。一八四四年他在俄罗斯遇见了日后的终生伴侣:卡若兰公主,两人相偕私奔到威玛宫廷,写下了他著名的浮士德和但丁交响曲,以及两首钢琴协奏曲,和著名的B小调钢琴奏鸣曲。另外,李斯特也是交响诗这种音乐型式的创始人,他将白辽士在幻想交响曲中所採用的固定乐念延伸到这些交响诗中,并据此发展出动机写作的手法。

To celebrate the 200th birthday of this master pianist and composer, this 6-CD set contains a diverse collection of the 100 best-loved masterpieces of Franz Liszt. The first CD begins with complete performances of Liszt’s two piano concertos, both firmly established as staples of the concerto repertoire. They are followed by extracts from a number of Liszt’s other works for piano and orchestra including Fantasy on Hungarian Folk Themes and Malédiction. The next three CDs cover Liszt’s huge output of works for solo piano, from miniatures like ‘La campanella’ (‘The little bell’) using a melody by Paganini and ‘Un sospiro’ (‘A sigh’), to the massive Sonata in B minor that was used so poignantly by Sir Frederic Ashton in his memorable ballet Marguerite and Armand created for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. CD 5 is a collection of Liszt’s songs, including the beautiful love song ‘O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst!’, otherwise known as Liebestraume No. 3. Liszt invented the term ‘Symphonic Poem’, which he applied to a number of orchestral works that did not obey traditional musical forms and were based generally on a literary or pictorial idea. CD 6 includes extracts from several of these, such as Prometheus, Festklänge and Les Préludes. Also represented here are other orchestral works such as Mephisto Waltz No. 1 and A Faust Symphony as well as several of Liszt’s famous Hungarian Rhapsodies, originally written for solo piano but performed here in spectacular orchestral versions that have achieved enormous popularity.

本辑收录48张首度由黑胶转录成CD之重点作品。
钢琴家Ania Dorfmann安妮雅-朵夫曼、俄国小提琴家Leonid Kogan柯岗、意大利男高音Cesare Valletti瓦雷提、重抒情女高音天后Zinka Milanov米兰-诺夫等名家经典录音再现。
这套录音收录了RCA在五零年代后期,以最新的高传真技术发行的经典录音。这一套录音与以往的同系列录音最大的不同在于,当中收录了四十八张LP转录的专辑,皆为首度以CD方式呈现。由此可知,从一九八四年CD问世以来,这些录音都未曾再版过,在这之前可能也已经绝版很久,因此有很多份录音,都可能是六十岁以下的乐迷未曾听过的罕见黑胶再版。比如说教出知名低音大提琴家盖瑞-卡尔(Gary Karr)和艾尔加-梅耶(Edgar Meyer)的低音大提琴家斯图亚特.桑基(Stuart Sankey)与节庆四重奏合作的舒伯特《鳟鱼》五重奏。很少台湾人知道,但五、六零年代在美国音乐界极具权威的女钢琴家安妮雅-朵夫曼(Ania Dorfmann)所弹奏的舒曼。朵夫曼是当时少数能够和指挥大师托斯卡尼尼同台合作和录音的女性钢琴家,出生并成长于俄国的她,十一岁就在俄国举行独奏会,并曾为当时比她小几岁的小提琴大师海飞兹伴奏,十八岁前往巴黎追随巴黎音乐院名教师伊西多-菲利普(Isidor Philipp)习琴,之后返回俄国,到俄国大革命后才又返回巴黎,在欧洲享有十五年知名钢琴家的声望,直到二战爆发才将重心移往美国,成为托斯卡尼尼第一位邀请合作的女性钢琴家。同样罕见的还有俄国小提琴家柯岗(Leonid Kogan),在一九五八年录下的小品集,当中他演奏了德布西《月光》等优美乐曲,以柯岗近年被人怀念的名气甚高,很难想象这份录音直到现在才有机会获得再版。被视为俄国小提琴学派最伟大代表人物的他,因为很少有机会到西方演出,五十八岁早逝再加上一直躲避公众目光,也不受到俄国当局青睐,因此很长一段时间知名度都远在奥伊斯特拉夫(David Oistrakh)之下。这些录音中柯岗使用的是两把价值超过四百万美金的瓜奈里名琴ex-Colin(1726)和ex-Burmester(1733),柯岗也是少数使用钢弦而非羊肠弦的小提琴家,因此让他的录音特别值得珍藏。
同样值得一听的是由意大利男高音瓦雷提(Cesare Valletti)所灌录的意大利艺术歌曲集。他是知名歌唱家史基帕(Tito Schipa)的学生,在五零年与卡拉丝合作罗西尼歌剧而扬名全球,之后卡拉丝与维斯康提、伯恩斯坦合作《梦游女》时也指定与他合作,之后卡拉丝多次的《茶花女》也和瓦雷提合作。他和卡拉丝一九五八年的茶花女演唱被誉为史上此剧最佳演出,这份录音就是在当时录下的。
同样珍贵的还有二十世纪中叶重抒情女高音天后米兰-诺夫(Zinka Milanov)的咏叹调专辑。她是被指挥大师华尔特(Bruno Walter)所发掘,特别推荐给大师托斯卡尼尼,参加他唯一一次在萨尔兹堡演出威尔第安魂曲的演唱。之后托斯卡尼尼重要的电台演出录音也都与她合作。这么重要的女高音,她的独唱录音却一直没机会再版,在此刻首度CD问世,能听到的人可以说是何其幸运,因为这声音可能有超过半世纪失传,直至现今才有机会再度流传于乐迷心中。

At a time when Bach, Telemann and Handel were still young, in the early 18th century, Venice was nothing less than a musical magnet, and its greatest attraction was the raging, virtuosic violin playing of the priest-cum-composer Antonio Vivaldi. His performance was even recommended to tourists in a city guide dating from 1713. Inspired by such enthusiastic stories about this violin marvel, numerous musicians from all over Europe made their way to Venice to receive lessons from the master. In February 1715, for example, the Frankfurt lawyer and impresario Uffenbach attended an opera in the Teatro Sant’Angelo: ‘ Towards the end Vivaldi played a solo, most admirable. Finally he gave an improvisation, which brought about a great shock in me. For things like this are really unplayable, now and in the future. His fingers came within a hair breadth of the bridge, so that hardly any space remained for the bow, and he played unbelievably fast fugues on all four strings.’ Uffenbach wrote later: ‘After the meal, the celebrated composer and violinist Vivaldi visited me, which I had often urged him to do. I spoke to him about several concertos that I wanted to obtain from him and I ordered them. I had some bottles of wine brought for him. He improvised in a most complicated manner on the violin, truly inimitable. At such close sight I could admire his dexterity even better. I realised that he played extremely difficult and varied pieces, but in a manner neither pleasant or cantabile.’

布拉姆斯《第二号大提琴奏鸣曲》,F大调,OP.99,作於1886年,瑞士托恩湖畔(与《第二号A大调小提琴奏鸣曲》同时完成)。共4个乐章:1.活泼的快板,F大调,奏鸣曲式。第一主题为;“汹涌怒涛冲击般”的钢琴震音伴奏下,大提琴奏出歌剧咏嘆调式的旋律,呈示部的发展充满热情。发展部为升F小调,力度减弱,大提琴奏出柔和的半音阶化新旋律,钢琴以对位法加入后达到顶点,再现部以第一主题为基础,它的变形变得相当优雅。2.哀婉动人的慢板,升F大调,3段体,充分发挥大提琴的性格,钢琴则展现完美的对位法,第二段开始时有一段热情的迸发。3.热情的快板,F小调,3段体。速度极快,随时出现意外的休止和音的挪位,以体现谐謔风格。第二段不是一般的抒情的歌曲形态,而是回旋曲式与奏鸣曲式有机的混合。4.很快的快板,F大调,回旋曲式。这一乐章在正主题之后出现的副主题所出现时明朗而活泼,变调后略显忧愁。正主题再现结束后,转至降D大调,第二副主题出现,钢琴三连音伴奏给人深刻印象。乐章结尾部是由大提琴拨奏暗示主题,技巧的效果极佳。
布拉姆斯(Johannes Brahms, 1833~1897)在创作第一号交响曲的时候,花了二十二年的时间,只因为他坚持要表现出最完美的一面;而他的两首大提琴奏鸣曲,间隔也将近二十年,对於这位如此自我要求的作曲家来说,我们是不是也可以从这两首作品当中,观察到他在人生阶段中的变化呢? 布拉姆斯在十八岁时,就写过大提琴奏鸣曲,但这些初期的习作,事后都被撕毁了,后来正式出版的,只有E小调和F大调这两首。其中的第一号是在布拉姆斯完成著名的「德意志安魂曲」时所作,也是他开始强烈散发出独特忧愁抒情性的代表作之一。二十年后的第二号,则是显示出他成熟风格的晚年作品。 E小调第一号大提琴奏鸣曲 Op.38
西元1865年,那年三十三岁的布拉姆斯正面临失去母亲的痛苦,但母亲的去世却也刺激了布拉姆斯,在一年之中分别完成许多重要的作品,其中也包含这一首,曾被布拉姆斯搁置三年,带有一点北国寒冷、凄凉感觉的「E小调第一号大提琴奏鸣曲」。 这首E小调的作品,听起来感觉非常荒凉,彷彿有一种寒冷的北国风情,这也是因为布拉姆斯尝试将巴哈时代的对位法以及十八世纪的均衡美感,做一融合,而创作出这首三个乐章都用小调、而且曲风大胆具实验性的「E小调第一号大提琴奏鸣曲」。另外还有一个可能,就是大提琴极少升高到高音域,大部分都处在比钢琴的音域更低的位置,所以制造出深沉的声音效果。 第一乐章,「从容的快板」
一开始大提琴低音吟唱的声音,让人觉得十分哀伤与悲凉,在大提琴充满感情的第一主题旋律,以及与钢琴优美的对位曲式之后,紧接著的是以卡农风格所呈现的第二主题。 第二乐章,「小步舞曲式的稍快板」
布拉姆斯「第一号大提琴奏鸣曲」的第二乐章,是「小步舞曲式的梢快板」,具有阴鬱的色彩,也反映了布拉姆斯丧母的悲痛心情。布拉姆斯的母亲对布拉姆斯而言,是一生中最重要的人,她也是所有家人中最支持、最了解布拉姆斯的人。母亲坚毅的性格,深深地影响布拉姆斯。在布拉姆斯成功的时候,第一个写信表达以他为荣的人,也就是他的母亲,因此布拉姆斯对母亲有种特殊的感情与意义。而第二乐章中大提琴苦恼式的凄凉旋律,以及充满流畅线条与典雅的浪漫情怀,让人感受到布拉姆斯对母亲的缅怀之情。 第三乐章,「快板」

Brahms's important output of 24 chamber scores dominated the second half of the 19th century, as that of Beethoven had dominated the first half. His corpus was thus a response to that of Beethoven, his model, and to that of Mendelssohn, who was likewise born in Hamburg and also composed two cello sonatas. In 1890, aged only 57, Brahms resolved to give up composing but he had reckoned without the inspiration that his meeting with the Meiningen clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld was to have on his creative imagination. He subsequently added four scores for clarinet to his output, including this Trio Op. 114.
Louis Schwizgebel-Wang was awarded 2nd prize at the Leeds Piano Competition 2012.

Ophélie Gaillard has always displayed an extraordinary palette of colours and these come alive more than ever on this recording of Brahms’s two cello sonatas and the Clarinet Trio. One of her strengths lies in her unobtrusive but deliberate phrasing (aided by the magnificently resonant Goffriller cello she plays), which makes sense of the music without labouring it. She demonstrated the power of this approach with great skill in her elegant second recording of the Bach Cello Suites (9/11) but now exhibits it in Brahms’s sonatas.
Gaillard is no stranger to heavier works but the voyage into earlier repertoire since her last such disc (aside from last year’s recording of the Schumann Concerto) seems to have informed her playing with even more subtlety than before. Brahms’s sonatas have big themes, and for the cello this is nowhere better illustrated than in the First, where the division of labour between the cello and the piano is much as it is in the violin sonatas. Although occasionally the reciprocity that is therefore so necessary between the cello and piano is a bit lost – for example when you hear the themes from the cello return through the piano, with the piano accompaniment transposed into the cello part – the piano of Louis Schwizgebel-Wang in the sonatas is also beautiful, especially in the second movement of the First Sonata, where it follows the lead of the cello and in turn gently encourages it in new directions. In the Trio, Fabio Di Càsola reminds the listener how it was hearing the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld that tempted Brahms back to composition after he had elected to give up.
