5.0 out of 5 starsFine Retrospective From Warner Classics Of Helene Grimaud's Best Recordings For This Label
By John Kwok HALL OF FAME on May 25, 2007
Format: Audio CD
Warner Classics has turned once more to its vaults, hoping to reap some additional financial rewards from legendary young French pianist Helene Grimaud, who has now an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. While cynics may criticize this latest compilation from Warner Classics, serious fans of classical music may find much that is rewarding here. Grimaud's disciplined, yet emotionally intense performances have been compared favorably to the likes of Martha Argerich and Claudio Arrau. Many critics and fans have observed that she performs with the wisdom and maturity of an artist who is far more advanced in age than hers (This is an interesting observation in light of the recent success earned by another Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, Lang Lang, who has yet to attain the artistic maturity which Grimaud has demonstrated for years.). In these recordings made for Teldec in the mid to late 1990s, Grimaud was fortunate to work closely with such eminent conductors as David Zinman, Kurt Sanderling and Kurt Masur, and with excellent symphony orchestras in North America and Europe, including the Berliner Staatskapelle, New York Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony orchestras. Among my favorites is her fiery performance of the Schumann Piano Concerto, which sounds remarkably fresh in her capable hands and in the excellent muscianship demonstrated from the Deutsches-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and conductor David Zinman. Yet another favorite is an exquisitely well-played performance of the Brahms 1st Piano Concerto, in which she is accompanied by Kurt Sanderling and the Berliner Staatskapelle. Not surprisingly, yet another highlight is her excellent, rather vibrant, performance of the Gershwin Piano Concerto with David Zinman conducting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. If you've wondered why Helene Grimaud has received such ample praise from critics and fans alike, then hopefully you'll find this CD set as an important reason why she has earned such warm adulation from critics and classical music fans across the globe.

AllMusic Review by James Leonard
In this 2006 Beethoven program, Isabelle Faust's tone is subtle and strong, her intonation true, her technique flawless, and her interpretations so sweetly lyrical that the young German violinist sounds like the true heir of the late Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux. Partnered with conductor Jirí Belohlávek and the Prague Philharmonia in the concerto and with pianist Alexander Melnikov in the sonata, Faust creates a concerto that is Grecian in its poetic purity and Roman in its pastoral loveliness and a sonata that is Dionysic in its ecstatic outer Prestos and Apollonian in its central Andante. Captured in rich but clear sound by artistic director Martin Sauer in the warm acoustics of the Rudolfinum in Prague, these recordings deserve as wide an audience as possible. It should also be noted that Faust plays none of the usual cadenzas in the concerto, but rather, newly written cadenzas by Russian composer Katia Tchemberdji that are slyly entertaining and surprisingly lovely.

Beethoven: Violin Concerto; Sonata/Faust
Review by: David Hurwitz
Artistic Quality: 9
Sound Quality: 9
Isabelle Faust plays this concerto with plenty of personality. While her initial entrance sounds just a touch affected, from there on her resinous tone and fearless passagework produce a reading of uncommon energy, without ever compromising Beethoven’s basically lyrical inspiration. You’ll be particularly taken with her cadenzas. In the first movement she includes solo timpani as did Beethoven himself in his transcription of the work for piano and orchestra, while Faust’s transition between the Adagio and the Finale has to be one of the most compelling and effective on disc. Tempos throughout are ideal.
The Prague Philharmonia under Jirí Belohlávek accompanies beautifully–not just where we might expect (the woodwinds), but in the detailed rhythmic underpinning that permits Faust to really float Beethoven’s melodies. Consider, for example, the unobtrusive clarity of the triplet rhythm beneath the first movement’s second subject, or the measured tremolos propelling the canonic cadence theme that closes the exposition. It’s really a pleasure to hear such a close collaboration between soloist and conductor, and it works like a charm. Only Faust’s occasional tendency, previously mentioned, to underline a phrase too heavily prevents this rendition from attainting virtual perfection.
I have no such reservations concerning the Kreutzer Sonata. This performance smokes. Faust and Melnikov blast their way through the first movement with seat-of-the-pants excitement. The long, central variation movement sounds about half its usual length in a reading of high contrasts and unflagging spirit, while the finale will leave you breathless, precisely because the phrasing and articulation are not. Given the obviously different challenges presented to the engineers, the sonics in both works are extremely clear, well-balanced, and natural. This is a lovely disc that will make a memorable impression, even if you already own 40 or 50 versions of each work. [9/27/2007]

AllMusic Review by James Manheim
Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili is a phenomenon, and kudos to Sony Classical for snagging her! This is Chopin of the old school, with massive interposition of the performer between music and listener. And it's glorious. The Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 35, is an absolutely original reading, with that black belt of classical pianism, a fresh rendition of the famous funeral march, with real involvement in the emotional content of the movement. This is a Chopin funeral march played after someone actually died, and the moment of chilly nihilism that serves as the finale is really a bit scary here. The big Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52, is hardly less stirring. Buniatishvili races forward at times, delays as if in torture at other times, and has the skills and the raw power to pull it all off. Are there problems? Sure. It's true that a 19th-century virtuoso recital would have freely mixed orchestral and solo music, but the live performance of the Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21, doesn't quite fit here, partly because the acoustic of the Salle Pleyel in Paris is nothing like that of the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin, where the other pieces were recorded. And a few of Buniatishvili's dynamic contrasts go beyond anything Chopin could have accomplished with his own piano or even intended. But these are the flaws that serve only to point up the considerable accomplishments elsewhere. This is the kind of Chopin playing that people used to line up to hear.

By Santa Fe Listener HALL OF FAME on October 19, 2012
Format: Audio CD
Now that Sony places seemingly no attention on the U.S. market, it would be hard for music lovers to know much about pianist Khatia Buniatishvili. a child prodigy who was touring Europe by the age of ten, and who rejected the violin despite having perfect pitch, she is quoted in her Wikipedia article as calling the piano "a sumbol of musical solitude" (one suspects that something was lost in translation). She is now 25 and has made her way into the festivals run by Martha Argerich and Gidon Kremer - all of which raises high expectations for this new Chopin recital.
They begin to be filled form the first piece, modest as it is. Buniatishvili plays the Waltz in C-sharp minor with lovely musical instincts and crystal-clear touch. On a sliding scale, her lightness and deftness are closer to dinu Lipatti than, say Evgeny Kissin or Argerich herself. then it's on to the major solo work on the program, the "Funeral March" Sonata. It is approached almost as tenderly as the waltz, with lyrical flow dominating even in louder, more forceful passages - they are done with vigorous animation but not a hint of banging. The Trio of the Scherzo brings a famous melody, and I've never heard it played more naturally and with such poise. I found myself becoming a fan of Buniatishvili's before ten minutes was out. The transitions between episodes are silken and seamless.
The Funeral March itself remains a challenge; its over familiarity dares a young pianist to say something new or personal. Buniatishvili is a bit cautious, preferring to move ahead with steady declamations of the theme. But where she scores is in her ability to balance the theme with the lugubrious cadences in the left hand. Everything merges and sounds of a piece. Again there is no banging, and when the lyrical second theme enters, she transitions to it with utter simplicity and ease. the overall effect is of great dignity and tender melancholy, a respite from other pianists who want to bury the dead as pompously as possible. The sonata's will-o-the-wisp finale, a ferociously difficult Presto that must never rise much above a whisper, is rendered with precision and clarity; at the same time, Buniatishvili refuses to whisper and adds a sense of suppressed passion.
The last solo work is a Chopin connoisseur's favorite, the Ballade in F minor, treasured because of its wide range of expression and its capacity for bringing out as much emotional subtlety as a pianist can bring to it. Some pianists like Kissin overpower the piece - in a good way - through overt passion and a loud voice. Buniatishvili begins more softly and poetically than anyone I've heard in a great while, but soon her emotional expression, and wonderful technique, flashes out. This is amazingly assured, intuitive Chopin playing. Her ability to transit effortlessly from one episode to the next, which I had already admired, becomes breathtaking here. On Youtube you can hear a very moving and impressive Fourth Ballade from the gold medal winner of the last International Chopin competition in 2010, Yulianna Avdeeva from Russia. Taking nothing from her, Buniatishvili manages to be totally engrossing from first note to last, not just in the build-up to the end, where most pianists let the stops out.
the second half of the album is with orchestra - Paavo Jarvi leads the Orchestre de Paris on Chopin's Piano Cto. no. 2. Despite the oft-repeated criticisms of Chopin's orchestral writing, Jarvi conducts with a will; you don't feel that the show is marking time waiting for the star to enter. Sony's sound, which is very good in the solo numbers, is good here, too - clear, natural, nicely balanced. Buniatishvili remains true to her musical personality from the first entry, understating it while still holding our attention. Like Jarvi, she's intent on finding as much music as possible behind the almost constant fingerwork. This results in a lovely rise and fall as tenderness blends into brilliant passages. Listeners who want to hear the entire work attacked with maximum splash, as Argerich does, may feel a bit let down. We are more in the world of Ivan Moravec's elegant nuances.
I'll confess to not being a great fan, and certainly not a collector, of Chopin's two concertos. I've tried to relate what I hear, even if I can't offer extensive, or even very secure, comparisons with other versions. It was Buniatishvili's extraordinary poise and musicianship that struck me, as much here as in the solo works. To settle us after the scintillating finale, thee is a single slow, melancholy Mazurka in A minor Op. 17 no. 4, exquisitely done. I only wish Sony paid enough attention to the North American market that such an extraordinary keyboard artist could be widely appreciated.

Khatia Buniatishvili's new album, "Motherland," is an intimate quest encompassing solo piano works from Bach to Pärt and from Brahms to Kancheli, in which the themes of longing for home, the merriment of a folk dance and the eternal cycle of growth and decay are apparent. These are quiet, dreamy pieces, most of them not written for the concert hall, but expressing a personal journey for peace and a protected place. Spanning a broad stylistic and historical range, Motherland juxtaposes the happy lightness of a "Slavonic Dance" by Dvo ák and the melancholy of Grieg's lyrical "Homesickness" and contrasts the elegant gaiety of Mendelssohn's "Song without Words" (Op. 67/2) with the graceful introspection of Liszt's "Lullaby." Classics of the Romantic piano repertoire such as Chopin's Étude in C-sharp minor (Op. 25/7) and Brahms's "Intermezzo" (Op. 117/2) are embedded between Bach's cantata "Sheep May Safely Graze" and Arvo Pärt's musical dedication "For Alina."
Khatia Buniatishvili has been described by The Independent as "the young Georgian firebrand." At the age of only 26 years, this Tblisi-born pianist has already achieved an exceptional maturity of interpretation and a distinctive artistic approach that make her playing unmistakable. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2008 and has played with many famous orchestras around the world including the Israel Philharmonic with Kent Nagano, the San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris under Paavo Järvi.

AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson
As she has demonstrated in her critically acclaimed albums of the keyboard music of Liszt and Chopin, Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili is a stunning virtuoso with impressive skills and her dynamic playing compels listening. However, for her 2014 Sony album, Motherland, she finds subtle expressions in her favorite character pieces, and none of them could be considered showstoppers. Most of the selections reflect calm and intimate moods, typified by Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze, Tchaikovsky's Autumn Song, Debussy's Clair de lune, and Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte, while the liveliest pieces, which include Mendelssohn's Song Without Words in F sharp minor, György Ligeti's Musica Ricercata No. 7, Dvorák's Slavonic Dance in E minor, and Scarlatti's Sonata in E major, offer rather modest displays of technique. Instead of dazzling her listeners, Buniatishvili is putting forward her personal, private side in this understated program, and the key to her selections is the sense of yearning that these pieces evoke. The most passionate outpouring of emotion comes in her own arrangement of Vaguiorko ma, a Georgian folk song that surely must hold a special place in her emotional world. Because this is a gentle and poignant album, listeners may find it is best appreciated in a quiet space with few distractions.

AllMusic Review by James Manheim
Once in a while comes a really wild release from one of the major labels, and here's the top candidate for 2016. Pianist Khatia Buniatishvili deploys her formidable technical talent in breakneck-speed readings of these 19th and 20th century classics, and moreover, in extremely unorthodox interpretations. They may be outrageous, but they're certainly not boring. Buyer reactions are going to be all over the map, so here's a rough stab at a balanced view. Perhaps the most extreme piece here is Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, where Buniatishvili discards the static series of tableaux plainly suggested by the title of the work and by nearly a century-and-a-half of performing tradition in favor of an impressionistic reading that is by turns dreamy and frenetic. Among the works on the program, this one may be hardest to swallow for the majority of listeners, but even if you're disconcerted, sample Ravel's La Valse (track 17). This is frenetic as well, but there's a long tradition of emphasizing that side of the work, and here Buniatishvili can be extremely compelling. The Three Movements from Petroushka are again unorthodox Stravinsky, epic rather than cool, but again both highly original and brilliantly executed. With superb recording from Berlin's Funkhaus studio capturing an artist who has worked in the pop realm and there learned something about seizing the attention of an audience, this is a major release from a striking young talent.

Khatia Buniatishvili's new recording Kaleidoscope, a unique combination of masterful and challenging pieces, shows her true virtuosic playing and features the well-loved Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, Ravel's La Valse and Stravinsky's Petruschka.
Given that these pieces all have an orchestral version, the pianist must bring out this larger palette of colours on a single instrument. Khatia does just that, painting her own picture of the pieces, how they are interwoven and the special characters she wants to emphasize.
There is a strong sense of character about the programme - it is music to be seen as well as heard, and it takes in other art forms as well: dance, puppetry and painting. The movement and colours of these other art forms are encapsulated in Khatia’s playing and the album’s title, Kaleidoscope.

May 17th 2016 sees Erik Satie's 150th anniversary and ECHO-Klassik Award winning pianist Olga Scheps presents the only new studio recording of his most beautiful piano solo works for the Satie celebrations 2016
Erik Satie is among the most popular composers worldwide, his most famous piano pieces such as „Gymnopédie No. 1” or “Je te veux” are instantly recognisable, having be used constantly in motion picture soundtracks and TV ads.
As a special Bonus Olga Scheps recorded “Gentle Threat” by Chilly Gonzales, whom she frequently works together with on stage
Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique. Among those who discovered these talents was Alfred Brendel, who has encouraged Olga Scheps since she was fifteen.
Olga Scheps has already recorded 5 albums for RCA Red Seal. (for further details see below) All her recordings ranked high within the German Classical Charts and were highly praised by the press. Her debut album 'Chopin' immediately won the prestigious ECHO Klassik Award in 2010.
As a passionate chamber musician, she plays regularly with such artists as Alban Gerhardt, Daniel Hope, Adrian Brendel, Jan Vogler, and Nils Mönkemeyer.

Brahms/Sonates Violin Sonatas No. 2&3 (Faust, Melnikov)(harmonia mundi)
旧版编号HMC901981(2008)

A 19th-century 'trio sonata'. Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov have already given us an acclaimed version Brahms's First Violin Sonata, in 2007. They now complete the cycle with the other two sonatas of 1886 and 1888, and add a fascinating rarity dating from 35 years earlier: the 'F-A-E' Sonata, a collaborative effort by three composers in honour of the great violinist Joachim, who had to guess who had written which movement! He did so with ease, for the Scherzo is as eminently Brahmsian as the Intermezzo and Finale are Schumannesque.

AllMusic Review by James Manheim
There are plenty of recordings of Brahms' second and third violin sonatas, cornerstones of the violin chamber repertoire that demand much from the players in terms of keeping melody and motivic intricacy balanced. This one, from the violin-and-piano duo of Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov, has several features that make it stand out. One is the presence of a third sonata that's rarely recorded (along with three Romances by Robert Schumann that are not exactly common items themselves). This is the so-called F-A-E Sonata, a collaborative work by the young Brahms (who wrote the Scherzo), Schumann (who wrote the slow movement and the exuberant finale), and Schumann's student Albert Dietrich. The work's dedicatee was Joseph Joachim, who had adopted the motto "Frei aber einsam" (free but lonesome) that gave the work its name. Joachim was challenged to identify the composer of each movement and did so without difficulty; you may well do the same, but the work, unified by the F-A-E pitches used in the thematic material, is more than the gimmick it might seem. The otherwise unknown Dietrich was pushed to what are probably his greatest heights by his two talented co-composers, and the opening sonata-form movement at least inhabits the same world as Schumann and Brahms. The other novelty here is Melnikov's period piano, an 1875 Bösendorfer that strips away a good deal of the warm Steinway haze the sonatas have in most performances and leaves in its place a rather spare performance that even in the songful Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 100, shifts the listener's attention to the motivic structure, perhaps in recognition of the fact that Brahms designated the Violin Sonata No. 2 a sonata "for piano and violin." The performance has the clarity that characterizes Melnikov's solo recordings of Romantic repertory, even if the case for period instruments is a good deal less clear here than it is in earlier music. At the very least, however, this is an intriguing Brahms recording, and the Teldex Studio sound is superb.

5.0 out of 5 starsThis is another thoughtfully perceptive disc to add to the consistently impressive Faust discography.
By I. Giles TOP 500 REVIEWER on October 13, 2015
Format: Audio CD
This disc, recorded in 2014, completes the whole set of the three Brahms violin sonatas played by Faust and Melnikov. The first sonata, previously issued, is coupled with the Brahms trio and his Op 116 Fantasias for piano. This inevitably makes for difficulties for collectors as the main alternatives for the violin sonatas couple all three on one disc.
This disc also comes with unusual couplings which are the Schumann Three Romances which were published for either violin and piano or oboe and piano. These are very attractive pieces of vintage Schumann inspiration in a particularly gentle and song-like mode. The song-like nature of the music particularly suits the oboe, a wind instrument which phrases like a singer. There is a famous and superb version of these three pieces for oboe played by Holliger and Brendel as part of a Schumann disc of supreme quality. However, Faust and Melnikov make a strong case for the violin version with all the appropriate empathetic phrasing and tonal response.
At this point it is worthwhile to mention that the Faust disc features Melnikov's own Bosendorfer piano from 1875 and Faust’s Stradivarius violin which makes this disc qualify for ‘period’ status. The piano tone and dynamics are far more in line with modern pianos than might be expected and is far fuller than those used for period performances of music of an earlier date. No hint of woodenness’ or shallow tonal response for example and far greater dynamic range by this time. This disc will not cause concern for those interested in a modern instrument sound and who will be more likely to be mildly intrigued by the sound presented here.

By Frank T. Manheim on August 16, 2003
Format: Audio CD
The late Jean-Pierre Rampal, whom I had the pleasure to meet and chat with in the 1980's, is a "triple threat" man, in analogy to the football term. Some fine players impress with their technique. I am swept along by Rampal's renditions in a way that makes me forget all about technique - except for miraculous nuances every now and then that remind me that Rampal recreates every work with a creative, perceptive mind. For example, in Vivaldi's "Goldfinch" concerto Rampal, as almost afterthoughts, puts in exquisite little embellishments that literally makes a little bird come to life. It's a miraculous sound. Too bad Antonio Vivaldi couldn't have heard it.
Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.
Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.
Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.

(The Observer)
(Most Excellent Order of the British Empire)之「员佐勋章」(Member,简称「MBE」)的肯定。

I heard the Shostakovich on "record review" on Radio 3 and was transfixed: got the CD a few days later. The Shostakovich is sensational: I have listened to this many times before, but no other recording has ever opened up the piece so much. It is a wonderful interpretation: not just the violin, but also the orchestra. The heart of the concerto is the passacaglia and cadenza. The cadenza is quite amazing: it builds up slowly into something quite huge. I remember seeing this performed once (A Russian gentleman whose name escapes me) and I remember thinking that the sound was like incense rising into the dome of the Albert hall. Well, Benedetti does this wonderfully. Having seen her recently doing Szymanowski, I am firmly of the opinion that she is the one of thee greatest violinists around: she has a maturity and precision that is very rare. There are technically gifted violinists around, but someone who combines this with her musicality is very very rare. The Glazunov is also good - I am used to the old Heifetz recording. She has a wonderful sweet sound, as we heard when she did the Korngold, and it works very well here. The finale is slower than I am used to, but the slower tempo allows for a more precise articulation by Benedetti. However, for me Shostakovich is what makes this.
Sensational violinist Nicola Benedetti returns with a riveting recording of Shostakovich’s monumental Violin Concerto (No. 1). This new recording follows Benedetti’s chart-topping success with Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy (Homecoming, 2014) and Korngold’s Violin Concerto (Silver Violin, 2012).
Benedetti’s own encounter with Russian music-making began in her childhood, the seriousness and intensity making a powerful impact on the young violinist: “I was thrust into a different world” says Nicola, “a little terrifying, extremely demanding but so loving, so warm”.
Together with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kirill Karabits, the dark, introspective Shostakovich Violin Concerto is brought to life in a compelling performance packed full of energy, powerful torment, and breath-taking passion. The demonic scherzo notches up intensity; the passionate third movement – possibly one of the finest in the canon of violin concertos – has a grand magnificence; and the astonishing Burlesque rounds off this visceral recording.
A work with a tormented history itself – the hostile political environment of Russian state censorship at the time of composition in the 1940’s meant that Shostakovich kept the concerto unpublished until after Stalin’s death – it was first performed in 1955 by David Oistrakh, and immediately highly regarded internationally.
Programmed alongside Shostakovich’s assertive, uncompromising masterpiece, is Glazunov’s bold, colourful Violin Concerto. A late-Romantic work, the Glazunov is notable for its lyricism; Benedetti’s generous, radiant performance is uplifting and finely crafted.

Beatles In Classics
☆ The Beatles -
☆ The 12 Cellists -

Okay, I have no idea why people are judging this based purely on lablings: quite frankly, it should be about the music, and nothing else.
Now, with that said, I have to say this is one of the most beutiful arrangements for a Band I've ever heard. The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Phil have done a phenominal job at creating something amazing and new out of something amazing and old. I have to say that this is for any fan of the Beatles, classical music, and anything cello related. I'd deffinately suggest the buy, as the entire album is gorgeous.
Oh, and Cello Choirs are probobly the best string ensembles in existance (biased, yes: but that's okay, because cello deserves my bias)

Rachel Barton Pine

AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson
Rachel Barton Pine has often performed the Sonatas and Partitas of Johann Sebastian Bach in recital, but her 2016 release on Avie is her first studio recording of this essential masterwork for violinists. Using a Baroque bow on a modernized 1742 Guarneri de Gesù violin, Pine plays the Sonatas and Partitas with crisp accentuation, transparent voicing, and a warm tone, much as she does in her concert performances. Her interpretation, which is influenced by period practices but not limited by them, offers clear counterpoint in the sonatas and buoyant dance rhythms in the partitas, and there is little scratchiness in her stopped chords to disrupt the smoothness and transparency of her elegant lines. Pine's depth of feeling and expressive insights into the music keep it from seeming like dry, technical exercises, yet there is none of the overly rhetorical Romantic approach here, either, so this reading does justice to Bach's likely intentions while communicating emotion in a subtle and tasteful manner. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful new account of these timeless and peerless masterworks by Bach. I compared Rachel Barton-Pine's interpretation to my long-treasured version played by the great Nathan Milstein -- and they are very different. Barton-Pine's performance is warmer, recorded in a church which produces a soft, glowing sound and she plays mostly with a sumptuous, smooth legato. Milstein is much choppier. He attacks many of the pieces, producing a more guttural, harsher effect. (I never realized this until I heard the contrast.) Obviously both are totally in command of their instruments.
I think there's definitely room in the world for both approaches. Barton-Pine lingers more on the beauty, with gorgeous, sweeping phrasing and a more ephemeral approach. Milstein seems grittier. I love them both.

Notes and Editorial Reviews
Wendy Warner is a magnificent cellist, and in Irina Nuzova she has found a keyboard partner who matches her in passion, elegance, and imagination. The result is as beautiful a chamber music recital as we have any right to expect, with the music intelligently organized to make an extremely satisfying full program. Miaskovsky's lovely sonata, written for Rostropovich in the late 1940s, can sound monotonous, with two moderately-paced movements preceding the lively finale. Not here. Warner and Nuzova time each movement perfectly and find so much variety of phrasing and timbre that there's never a dull moment. Instead, we focus on the music's abundance of soulful lyricism before the brilliant finale brings the piece to a virtuosic close.
Between this work and the Rachmaninov, Warner and Nuzova offer three charming short pieces: Scriabin's Etude Op. 8 No. 11, transcribed by Piatigorsky; Schnittke's Nostalgica; and the Adagio from Prokofiev's Ten Pieces from Cinderella. They make an arresting and highly varied assortment, but it's the Rachmaninov that's the real prize.
Just to hear the wonderful use of rubato at the opening is a treat. Warner has a real gift among cellists: a low register that never sounds like the proverbial dying cow, and a remarkable evenness of timbre throughout her range. Nuzova, for her part, glitters in the scherzo and finale, but never overpowers her colleague. Perfectly balanced engineering puts you in the same room as the players. A stunning release.

I'm generally suspicious of national stereotypes but this new CD recording of cello and piano works by Russian composers illuminates and gives life to the concept known as the "Russian soul." The recording by Chicago-based Cedille Records brings together cellist Wendy Warner and pianist Irina Nuzova in a collection by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Scriabin and Schnittke. But it's the opening work by a composer I had never heard of, Nikolai Miaskovsky (1881-1950) that was the real headliner for me.
Miaskovsky, who served on the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory from 1921 until his death, composed 27 symphonies, however he never won the fame of his contemporaries, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His work is little performed today. But from the first notes of his Sonata No. 2 for Cello and Piano, Op 81, which opens this CD, one is struck by the lyrical beauty and deep melancholy of the piece which seems to express something quintessentially Russian. It's simply a gorgeous and moving piece of music that has never before been recorded on American soil by an American artist by an American label. How exciting to discover a new landmark of late Russian romanticism, which alone is worth the price of this recording!
The very useful program notes which accompany this CD includes an essay by the pianist, Nuzova who grew up in Russia but moved to the United States as a teenager to escape anti-Semitism. The sonata, she says, has a pervasive, nostalgic quality that is subtle and subdued in its expression. Nuzova says the music reminds her of a poem by Konstantin Balmont (1867-1942) called "Wordlessness" and she includes an English translation.
Let me just quotes one stanza:
"The reeds are unstirring, the sedge doesnn't quiver.
Deep quiet. And wordlessness, utterly peaceful.
The meadows spread out faraway and forever.
In everything - weariness, muteness and bleakness."
The poem is a perfect fit for the music.
Cellist Wendy Warner, also has a Russian connection. As a student at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, she had the rare opportunity to learn from the legendary Russian virtuoso and human rights activist Mstislav Rostropovich.
She and Nuzova, both strikingly attractive in the cover photo, meld together seamlessly in this CD. They also give us a witty, minor-key minuet by Schnittke, a Prokofiev transcription from "Cinderella," an encore piece by Scriabin and Rachmaninov's sprawling Cello Sonata, which to my mind is not one of his most inspired creations but which is delivered with utter conviction and intensity.
Cedille has been around for 20 years, devoted to showcasing classical artists from the Chicago area. We must be thankful to the company for bringing us two undiscovered gems - the Miaskovsky and the beautiful poem by Bal'mont.

(The Observer)
(Most Excellent Order of the British Empire)之「员佐勋章」(Member,简称「MBE」)的肯定。

Int. Release 01 Jul. 2016

AllMusic Review by James Manheim
The title Nuances is uncommunicative and has nothing to do with the ballet of that name assembled from Scriabin's music by composer Alexander Nemtin. Instead, this recital by pianist and Internet marketing phenomenon Valentina Lisitsa represents a very specific kind of program, and it's good to see her essay something like this rather than the mainstream repertory she has generally done thus far. What Lisitsa offers here is a recital that focuses on a composer's youth, and the signs it may offer of that composer's maturity. Much of the music here comes from Scriabin's teenage years, and was never published. It's heavily modeled on Chopin, but keep your ears pricked and you'll hear all kinds of hints of the later Scriabin. It's not a question of chromaticism, for Chopin at his most experimental outdid anything in all but the last few pieces here. Instead, Scriabin experiments with blocks of static texture, with decorations Chopin would not have used, with little unanswered harmonic questions. Sample the second of the Two Impromptus, Op. 14 (track 16), for a piece that's right on the edge of what Scriabin would soon accomplish, some examples of which close out the program. Lisitsa doesn't do anything spectacular here, but the originality of the concept is notable, and she conveys the just slightly inward atmosphere of the earlier pieces effectively. Decca's Britten-Pears studio sound is very well suited to the project.
PUSHING BOUNDARIES: LISITSA EXPLORES THE PIANISTIC WORLD OF ALEXANDER SCRIABIN
Valentina Lisitsa, who has a formidable track record when it comes to mining the works of left-field composers, turns her attention to Alexander Scriabin with her new release, Nuance. While Scriabin was dramatically pushing at musical boundaries by the end of his short life, his early works are suffused with a fresh innocence – this selection from his lesser-known piano repertoire reflects the striking stylistic differences that characterised his all too brief career. Marking the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death in 1915 at the age of 43, Nuance will be released in October.
This is not Lisitsa’s first venture into Scriabin on disc. She featured on the recording of his complete works, released on Decca in April, earning this tribute from Audiophile Audition: “Lisitsa is an especially fine pianist who captures the special Scriabin feeling in her performances, which combine sensitivity and expressiveness with a command of dynamics.” She now returns to the enigmatic Russian Symbolist master after acclaimed albums devoted to the similarly iconoclastic Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, and to challenging Études by Schumann and Chopin.
Scriabin’s early music, delightfully easy on the ear, shows the influence of Chopin, which explains the profusion of such titles as Mazurka, Polonaise, Impromptu, Nocturne, Scherzo, Prélude, Étude and Waltz. The digital version of Nuance includes four extra tracks: the Étude op.49, no.1, the Mazurka in B minor, Feuille d’album in F sharp major and what is possibly the first recording of the Duett in D minor for two sopranos and piano.

令人瞠目结舌的音乐活力 ─by 「The Time」

AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson
Because Khatia Buniatishvili always wanted her debut recording to be a portrait of Franz Liszt, it is fortuitous that this album was released in time for the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. This CD/DVD combo introduces the Georgian pianist in a manner that seems half a fulfillment of a fantasy and half a kitschy marketing ploy for Sony, overdone in its packaging, photography, and booklet. But the window-dressing should take nothing away from Buniatishvili's playing, which is wholly convincing in its power, incisiveness, fluidity, and clarity. It is evident that she is committed to Liszt with passionate intensity, and her playing lacks nothing in the necessary expressive range, from the dreamy delicacy of the Liebesträum in A flat major to the towering grandeur of the Sonata in B minor, with every nuanced possibility in between. The program is quite accessible, with these famous pieces and others, such as the Mephisto Waltz No. 1, La lugubre gondola, and the Prelude & Fugue in A minor (after Bach). Buniatishvili clearly understands that Liszt's music was about a lot more than flashy runs and clangorous octaves, and that there is a subtle creative aspect of his work that influenced a century of Romantic music and is still being felt today. Having Buniatishvili as an interpreter is certainly good for the Liszt revival, and it, in turn, should be quite helpful for her career, despite the label's gilding of the lily.

There’s no doubting Khatia Buniatishvili’s talent. The Georgian pianist has an imposing technique at her disposal and, when she puts her mind to it, the ability to produce moments of insight and refined sensibility. She is in her late 20s now, at a time in her life when most pianists are turning early promise into real achievement, but to judge by the rash, immature playing in her latest London appearance, Buniatishvili is still some way from doing that.
Her programme – Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and a sequence of Liszt – was clearly designed for effect, and to have her fans on their feet and cheering at the end; predictably, they obliged. Pictures, though, had no shape at all, with the slower movements ponderously slow – Il Vecchio Castello was interminable – and faster ones lightning fast, so that they became trivialised, and Buniatishvili kicked up such a storm in The Hut on Fowl’s Legs that the dramatic effect of the segue into the final Great Gate of Kiev, one of the clinching moments in the whole work, was fatally undermined.
That tendency to extremes – the thinking that ever faster, ever louder, is automatically the best way to go – ran through the Liszt pieces too. Three studies from different sets, La Leggierezza, Feux Follets and La Campanella, at least allowed everyone to admire the pearly evenness of Buniatishvili’s fingering, but apart from a rather unconvincing Liebesträume to begin, around them were pieces that encouraged her to be as noisy as possible: the first Mephisto Waltz (not insidious, just rowdy), the Grand Galop Chromatique (turned into a low-grade circus act) and the second Hungarian Rhapsody – played, of course, in Vladimir Horowitz’s version, which adds tweaks and further elaborations to Liszt’s original. The good news is that the piano survived it all intact; the bad is that on the question of whether Buniatishvili can ever be a serious artist, the jury is very much still out.

AllMusic Review by James Manheim
The multinational Chiaroscuro Quartet promises performances of music of the Classical era "on period instruments informed by a historical approach." This tells you less than it would if applied to Baroque music, but the features of Classical-period historical string performance are in evidence here: vibrato is kept to a minimum, and the scooping accents possible on later instruments are scrupulously weeded out. The biggest surprise, however, would have been possible even played on contemporary instruments: the String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95, of Beethoven, designated by Beethoven as "Serioso," is given an interpretation with the seriousness radically scaled down. The group seems to be after a revisionist interpretation that holds that the violent qualities in this quartet were placed there by Romantic after-the-fact thinking and even later by psychoanalysis of Beethoven's difficult life around this time. The music is tense but light, with the really startling harmonic developments in the opening movement treated not as utterances of emotional torture but as little flashes of psychedelic light. The slow movements of all three works on the album are marvelous, with the players perfectly coordinated and the music seeming to breathe like some living creature, the lack of vibrato making the individual instruments difficult to pick out. And the Mozart Adagio and Fugue in C minor for string quartet, K. 546, and String Quartet in E flat major, K. 428 (a work also often given post-facto Romantic intensity) are less startling on first hearing. The Beethoven is one of those performances far enough outside the norm that it's safe to say some will think it's brilliant, some will hate it. But neither group will be able to claim it's not well thought out.

雷史毕基毕生的作品中,以罗马三部曲(Roman Triptych)最为有名,这三部作品分别描述罗马的三种景色,包括「罗马之泉The Fountains of Rome」、「罗马之松The Pines of Rome」和「罗马节日Roman Festivals」。

By Erik North on December 29, 2006
Format: Audio CD
A master orchestrator who learned his craft from another master orchestrator (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov), Ottorino Respighi was extremely well known in the early third of the last century for reviving old styles of music and making them into modern masterworks (e.g., he orchestrated a few of Bach's organ works). And perhaps the best example of Respighi paying homage to the distant past lies in the three orchestral suites, composed respectively in 1917, 1924, and 1932, that he titled "Ancient Airs And Dances For The Lute."
Based on dances composed by obscure Italian composers of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the Ancient Airs And Dances received perhaps their best recording here on this 1976 EMI release by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and their then-Music Director Sir Neville Marriner, who served from the time of the orchestra's birth in 1969 up to 1978. Both Marriner and the L.A.C.O. navigate around Respighi's orchestral colorings quite well, especially with the uses of harp and harpsichord in all three suites, full string orchestra in the third suite, and the use of trombones and timpani in the coda to the "Bergamasca" that concludes the second suite.
A fine example of a modern 20th century orchestrator bringing back forms from three to four centuries past, the Ancient Airs And Dances are never anything less than interesting, and the same can certainly be said for this recording, even if it was made three decades ago.

AllMusic Review by James Manheim
Alison Balsom has been successful since the early 2000s with a standard diet of Baroque trumpet works and the usual Classical-period concertos. In the mid-2010s she turned toward more contemporary repertory with a French conservatory flavor. The results on the trumpet-and-piano Légende, named for the effusive Enescu piece (track five), are impressive; Balsom deepens her art with a coherent program even as she plays mostly music that could be characterized as light. Sample one of the movements of the opening Sonatine of the mightily underrated Jean Françaix, whose understated style, not so much humorous as subtle and elegant, poses challenges for a trumpet confined mostly to its middle register. Balsom's bright, perfectly controlled lines and close ensemble with pianist Tom Poster pass all the tests. After that you get a mix of other neoclassic pieces, the heavier Hindemith Trumpet Sonata in the middle, and popular songs, small chunks all hanging together that stimulate the listener even without awareness of same. Brava.
