German born violinist Isabelle Faust and conductor Daniel Harding, the pairing here in Brahms' famous Violin Concerto Op. 77, belong to the modern school of period-induced playing and conducting. My previous experience with Faust was as violinist on a recording of Brahms chamber music and I last met Harding when he conducted some Beethoven overtures. I liked neither recording as well as I like this classically-rendered version of the concerto.
Faust, who was a Gramophone young artist of the year in 1997 after the release of her first album, built her reputation pursuing chamber music, 20th century and and lesser-known repertory from the likes of Jolivet, Ligeti, Danielpour and the concertos of Michael Jarrell and Thomas Larcher that were dedicated to her. In the intervening years, she has gone on to record famous concertos by Bach, Dvorak and Beethoven.
The Brahms concerto transcends these great works because of its classic lines of construction expressed in musical language from the late romantic period. Brahms built a titanic first movement, followed by a heartfelt and melodious slow movement, and wrapped up the affair with a rondo-dance. While transferring the emotional volatility of late 19th century romance, his classical concerto eschews the excesses of Tchaikovsky and other late romantics.
A virtuoso of the first order playing a 1704 Stradivarius, Faust seems to understand this. With bowing and double stops that match any violinist alive today, she practices virtuosic and emotional restraint while matching her orchestral partners' dramatic sweep and tension in the 20-minute opening movement, then quietly settles into Brahms' self-defined "feeble adagio" before sweeping away listeners with bravura playing in the Hungarian finale.
Using Ferrucio Busoni's first movement cadenza underlined by Harding's timpani, Faust is abetted by Harding and the 14-year-old Mahler Chamber Orchestra -- a modern period ensemble of about 40 players -- in a recording strong on orchestral clarity and power mated to vivid execution with solo work full of expressive character. While the Mahler Chamber Orchestra lacks the weight of a larger ensemble, and some listeners may not like all the sounds the horns make, they carry the argument splendidly in support of the soloist.
There are other versions of this concerto I enjoy -- Kennedy's indulgent version that stretches out the music 45 music and Heifitz's fiery virtuosity chief among them -- but none have the combination of expressive playing, clarity in execution and dramatic thrust this one demonstrates.
The significant add-on is Brahms Second Sextet for strings, Op. 36, a piece that projects more the autumnal resignation of his final symphony and Alto Rhapsody than the forward-stepping romance and triumph of the violin concerto. Faust leads from the violin in a reading that is, again, of 21st century sensibility while steeped in the classical (and traditional) values that make Brahms history's No. 4 classical composer behind only Beethoven, Bach and Mozart.
To hear one moment that envelops the sextet's enchanting playing and scintillating interpretation, listen to the way Faust et al handle the first movement's exposition subject on repeat, playing with tenderness and utter sensitivity to the changing moods of the piece, and hardly just playing the music that came a few minutes earlier. Even speeds a point or two faster than the norm do nothing to keep this performance from the first rank.
The CD version of this recording is handsomely packaged in a box, not a plastic case, the opens to a second set of foldouts containing the CD and the removable 42-page booklet. The latter contains an essay from Roman Hinke on the connection between Joseph Joachim and the Brahms concerto as well as three pages from Faust on her impressions of the music and why she chose Busoni's 1913 cadenza. The up close recording was made in Berlin in 2010.
In fine modern sound, Harmonia Mundi has created a 75-minute concert that Brahms lovers, whether wedded to the high cholesterol, big band oeuvre from the likes of Furtwangler, Karajan and Klemperer to the most modern school of playing, can enjoy equally. Only those unjustly averse to period style should avoid this exceptional chamber-sized issue.

The booklet of Isabelle Faust’s new recording includes an essay written by her regarding the performing editions used and the significance of the violinist Joseph Joachim in the string works of Johannes Brahms, as seen from a performer’s point of view. Since Brahms did not belong to a generation of composers who mastered several different instruments – as had Bach or Mozart – and composed from the perspective of a pianist, his exchange of ideas with Joachim, which in the case of the Violin Concerto lasted almost a year, was of decisive importance for the final form of the piece, one of the most difficult in the repertoire. Isabelle uses the rarely played cadenza by Ferruccio Busoni, which dates from 1913. Brahms got to know Busoni as a child prodigy and recommended the young pianist in a number of artistic circles: ‘What Schumann did for me, I will do for Busoni.’ The spirit of Joseph Joachim also hovers over the second work on this recording, for the composer regarded the violinist as his most important adviser in the realm of chamber music too. In the case of his Sextet, however, the most perceptible influence is that of the doomed love affair between the composer and the soprano Agathe von Siebold. That Brahms was unable to overcome their separation with a light heart is clear from the monument in sound to his lost romance in the lyrical second theme of the first movement. ‘A-GA- D/H-E’1 proclaims the sequence of notes making up the motif (bars 162 ff). Isabelle generously credits Christopher Hogwood, Robert Pascall, Stefan Weymar and Douglas Woodfull-Harris for their active support in all questions relating to the manuscript and the first edition of Op.36 and for generously making available a prepublication copy of the new Bärenreiter edition. Gramophone Magazine gave Isabelle Faust its Young Artist of the Year Award for her first recording of sonatas by Béla Bartók, in 1997 [now reissued on hm gold with volume 2].
The year 2010 marked a new stage in her recording career: Diapason voted her CD of Bach Partitas and Sonatas a Diapason d’Or of the Year, while her complete set of the Beethoven Sonatas with Alexander Melnikov, received the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Recording. Composed of around 40 musicians from 20 different nations, and independent of external sponsorship, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1997 by the players themselves and Claudio Abbado. In 1998, at the age of 22, Daniel Harding became Principal Guest Conductor; in 2003 he was named Music Director and he has served as Principal Conductor since 2008, conducting around a quarter of the orchestra’s projects each season. He is also Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the LSO and Music Partner of the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代,强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音,依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下,Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过,当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代,在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下,这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换,并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异,大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性,让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音;原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是,这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱,因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下,这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质,找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

I heard the Shostakovich on "record review" on Radio 3 and was transfixed: got the CD a few days later. The Shostakovich is sensational: I have listened to this many times before, but no other recording has ever opened up the piece so much. It is a wonderful interpretation: not just the violin, but also the orchestra. The heart of the concerto is the passacaglia and cadenza. The cadenza is quite amazing: it builds up slowly into something quite huge. I remember seeing this performed once (A Russian gentleman whose name escapes me) and I remember thinking that the sound was like incense rising into the dome of the Albert hall. Well, Benedetti does this wonderfully. Having seen her recently doing Szymanowski, I am firmly of the opinion that she is the one of thee greatest violinists around: she has a maturity and precision that is very rare. There are technically gifted violinists around, but someone who combines this with her musicality is very very rare. The Glazunov is also good - I am used to the old Heifetz recording. She has a wonderful sweet sound, as we heard when she did the Korngold, and it works very well here. The finale is slower than I am used to, but the slower tempo allows for a more precise articulation by Benedetti. However, for me Shostakovich is what makes this.
Sensational violinist Nicola Benedetti returns with a riveting recording of Shostakovich’s monumental Violin Concerto (No. 1). This new recording follows Benedetti’s chart-topping success with Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy (Homecoming, 2014) and Korngold’s Violin Concerto (Silver Violin, 2012).
Benedetti’s own encounter with Russian music-making began in her childhood, the seriousness and intensity making a powerful impact on the young violinist: “I was thrust into a different world” says Nicola, “a little terrifying, extremely demanding but so loving, so warm”.
Together with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kirill Karabits, the dark, introspective Shostakovich Violin Concerto is brought to life in a compelling performance packed full of energy, powerful torment, and breath-taking passion. The demonic scherzo notches up intensity; the passionate third movement – possibly one of the finest in the canon of violin concertos – has a grand magnificence; and the astonishing Burlesque rounds off this visceral recording.
A work with a tormented history itself – the hostile political environment of Russian state censorship at the time of composition in the 1940’s meant that Shostakovich kept the concerto unpublished until after Stalin’s death – it was first performed in 1955 by David Oistrakh, and immediately highly regarded internationally.
Programmed alongside Shostakovich’s assertive, uncompromising masterpiece, is Glazunov’s bold, colourful Violin Concerto. A late-Romantic work, the Glazunov is notable for its lyricism; Benedetti’s generous, radiant performance is uplifting and finely crafted.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代,强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音,依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下,Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过,当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代,在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下,这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换,并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异,大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性,让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音;原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是,这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱,因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下,这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质,找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

Spanning some one and a quarter centuries, the A minor Piano Trio of Tchaikovsky and Victor Kissine's Zerkalo (Mirror) for piano trio encompass the breadth and impressive development that has occurred in Russian chamber music during that time. Tchaikovsky, who once vehemently opposed writing for piano trio on the grounds that the combined sounds were intensely displeasing to him, ended up writing one of the most dramatic, sweeping examples in the literature. It is by no means conventional in its own right; Tchaikovsky abandoned the traditional movement structure and instead wrote a massive two-movement work. Kissine's Zerkalo was inspired by a line of prose, but also incorporates sophisticated and subtle mirrored sections throughout its complex score. Though the two trios could not be more different, they work well together on this disc, particularly in the capable hands of Gidon Kremer, Giedré Dirvanauskaite, and Khatia Buniatishvili. Kremer has long been a champion of modern works, and does great justice to Kissine's score. The level of detail and subtle aspects of dynamics, intonations, phrasing, and articulation that his ensemble incorporates makes for a gripping and at times chilling performance of this worthwhile composition. The Tchaikovsky completely changes gears in the most memorable ways; the tone changes from glasslike to a robust, meaty "Russian" sound that surrounds listeners with the memorable melodies and rich harmonies. ECM's recorded sound quality is full and resonant while maintaining an appropriate amount of clarity.

Rachel Barton Pine 瑞秋.巴顿.派恩 1974年生於美国芝加哥,三岁半开始学琴,七岁就登台,十岁与芝加哥交响乐团合奏,可以说是资赋优异的神童。 在家就学,每天练琴八个小时。
家里并不富裕,十四岁开始,不得不在一些婚礼场合或是乐团演奏以贴补家用。十七岁(1992)以最年轻及第一位美国人的身份赢得巴赫国际大赛的首奖及Jozsef Szigeti Violin Competition第二奖,还有国际克莱斯勒大赛的首奖。
1995年1月16日瑞秋在芝加哥搭地铁时,背在肩膀的琴盒被门夹住,被捲入366英呎远的轮下,经急救后,双腿截肢。 之后她控告芝加哥西北铁路公司要求赔偿,对方认为瑞秋是为了保护价值五十万美金的阿玛蒂名琴而受伤,所以应该负担大部分的责任。不过,陪审团显然并不这么认为。 经过年的休养,瑞秋重返乐坛。 2001年利用铁路公司的赔偿金,成立了以自己的名字为名的基金会。

几天前,小提琴家 Rachel Barton-Pine跟家人要从凤凰城的天港 Sky Harbor 机场飞往芝加哥,却被US Airway 航空阻拦说,她的1742 年耶穌瓜奈里 ‘Soldat’ 名琴,因为超过尺寸不得放在客舱内的头顶行李箱,客舱也找不到其他空间,要求她寄入货舱或是等下班飞机。她很生气地跟WQXR电台表示:「明明就还有空间的,其他旅客的包包挪动一下就可以,这就是很简单的重新放行李的事情而已啊,不过他们还是不让我放。」最后她选择跟家人搭下一班飞机,不过衣物等行李仍在原班机上先飞回芝加哥了。在等待下一班早班飞机的时间中,她索性就跟四岁女儿躺在机场航厦候机大厅睡觉。
耶穌瓜奈里 ‘Soldat’ 名琴,保守估计市值一亿五千万台币以上,1742年更是耶穌瓜奈里的制琴黄金年代,同期作品最高已有六亿台币身价,属於人类极稀有文化资产,也是音乐家职业生涯的谋生工具和第二生命,想当然尔「琴在人在」的音乐家一定是极尽生命在保护。
1995年,Pine在伊利诺州郊区 Winnetka 车站下火车时,当时车门安全科技尚未有感应器,意外夹住她肩上琴盒的背带(琴盒内的是Amati 名琴),在被人救下前火车夹住她的左肩拖行了366英尺,造成她双脚部分截肢。虽然最后在诉讼上告赢 Metra 和芝加哥西北铁路,但这期间的疗程跟花费,对她的职业生涯有著很大的影响,想必她在搭乘交通工具上的态度也是格外小心。
根据 US Airway的规定,带上机的乐器,必须合乎行李箱尺寸规定,机组人员会尽力为乘客寻找合适的空间摆放,但以不挪动其他乘客已摆好的行李为原则。

Rachel Barton Pine has often performed the Sonatas and Partitas of Johann Sebastian Bach in recital, but her 2016 release on Avie is her first studio recording of this essential masterwork for violinists. Using a Baroque bow on a modernized 1742 Guarneri de Gesù violin, Pine plays the Sonatas and Partitas with crisp accentuation, transparent voicing, and a warm tone, much as she does in her concert performances. Her interpretation, which is influenced by period practices but not limited by them, offers clear counterpoint in the sonatas and buoyant dance rhythms in the partitas, and there is little scratchiness in her stopped chords to disrupt the smoothness and transparency of her elegant lines. Pine's depth of feeling and expressive insights into the music keep it from seeming like dry, technical exercises, yet there is none of the overly rhetorical Romantic approach here, either, so this reading does justice to Bach's likely intentions while communicating emotion in a subtle and tasteful manner. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful new account of these timeless and peerless masterworks by Bach. I compared Rachel Barton-Pine's interpretation to my long-treasured version played by the great Nathan Milstein -- and they are very different. Barton-Pine's performance is warmer, recorded in a church which produces a soft, glowing sound and she plays mostly with a sumptuous, smooth legato. Milstein is much choppier. He attacks many of the pieces, producing a more guttural, harsher effect. (I never realized this until I heard the contrast.) Obviously both are totally in command of their instruments.
I think there's definitely room in the world for both approaches. Barton-Pine lingers more on the beauty, with gorgeous, sweeping phrasing and a more ephemeral approach. Milstein seems grittier. I love them both.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代,强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音,依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下,Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过,当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代,在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下,这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换,并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异,大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性,让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音;原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是,这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱,因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下,这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质,找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

如果说有什么音乐是被同时期的人所诅咒的话,舒曼的小提琴协奏曲应该可以算的上一例。第三方团体的误解导致这部艺术作品被完全隔离。乐曲完成於1853年的9月11日和10月3日之间,是舒曼晚期的重要作品,当时他的精神状况逐渐恶化,却爆发出人意料的惊人创作力。这首作品的诞生和当时名闻遐邇的小提琴家姚阿幸有关,在他的央求下,舒曼先是写了给小提琴和管弦乐团的单乐章幻想曲并且获得好评,之后他趁胜追击写了小提琴协奏曲希望姚阿幸能演出。但这回姚阿幸的态度似乎有所保留,最后甚至放弃计画。此刻开始宣告这首作品的波折命运。舒曼过世后遗孀克拉拉坚持不将此曲纳入他的作品全集,并将手稿交给姚阿幸。姚阿幸也就这么搁著没有任何动作,据信是因为他发现乐曲有足以透露曼精神疾病的作曲弱点,出於保护好友艺术地位的心情,他甚至指示在舒曼过世百年内这首作品都不能演出及出版。不过1937年7月德国的Schott出版社发行了姚阿幸继承人所找到的合法改编版才终於打破这项束缚。
1850年舒曼前往杜塞道夫担任乐团指挥,不过以指挥而言他并未有如作曲般的惊人才华,最后在团员的反弹下提早下台。然而这段时期除了第三号交响曲首演之外,他也有不少室内乐作品产出,包含本辑的《第三号钢琴三重奏作品110》前后也仅花一个星期就完成。舒曼作曲时向来习惯独处,远离所有外界纷扰,即便是太太克拉拉也一样。「罗伯特正在埋首创作一首给钢琴、小提琴和大提琴的三重奏,但是除非几近完成,否则他不会让我知道任何细节,我知道的就只有乐曲是G小调这样而已」克拉拉在日记上如此写道。
这张录音计画是我们(佛斯特、梅尼可夫、奎拉斯)在巡迴演奏舒曼的三重奏作品80时所讨论而诞生,身为舒曼的热情拥护者,我们一直很希望能将他写给钢琴、小提琴和大提琴的作品放置在更宽广的曲目中,让它们彼此之间能够互相闪耀映衬,进而让听眾能对舒曼的音乐有更深一层的瞭解。我们很快就决定要使用古钢琴和搭配羊肠弦的弦乐器,同时连管弦乐团也一并使用好让效果更合。多亏这一点,我们期待演出会取得更好的平衡、更佳的发声,同时也让我们打开心胸看到更多。 帕布罗.艾拉斯-卡萨多和佛莱堡巴洛克管弦乐团发自内心的演出更让他们成为这次录音的理想伙伴。当然了,他们对我们的想法无不感到兴趣昂然,摩拳擦掌跃跃欲试,也是在舒曼的音乐世界中最不可或缺的好伙伴。这趟一探舒曼魔幻世界的共享旅程,将会留给我们异常强烈、快乐并且充实的体验。

In the autumn of 1851 Schumann composed, in rapid succession, the two violin sonatas and, in the space of just seven days from 2 to 9 October, the Piano Trio no.3, Op.110. As always during his work, Schumann was oblivious to everything around him, neglected social obligations, and isolated himself – even from Clara. ‘Robert is working very assiduously on a trio for piano, violin, and cello,’ she confided to her diary, ‘but he won’t let me hear anything of it until he has quite finished it – all I know is that it’s in G minor.’
This trio, like all his other chamber works with piano, was tailor-made for Clara to play and right from the first rehearsal session in the domestic circle she went into a veritable frenzy of delight: ‘It is original, absolutely full of passion, especially the scherzo, which sweeps one away to the wildest depths’, Just a little bit of that same enthusiasm would probably have spared the Violin Concerto a great deal of opprobrium: Clara witheld the score, as did the dedicatee, Joachim. It was finally premiered in Berlin on 26 November 1937, more than 80 years after it was composed, with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Karl Böhm and the violinist Georg Kulenkampff. Yehudi Menuhin had the privilege of making the first commercial recording, produced in the following year, 1938, with the New York Philharmonic under its British principal conductor John Barbirolli.

As passionate admirers of the composer, we conceived the desire to place his works for piano, violin and cello in a broader context and to illuminate them mutually in order to allow listeners to gain a deeper understanding of his music. As mentioned above; this CD was part of the (admittedly very personal, 1-person-committee) Forbes Best Classical Recordings of 2015 list, titled "Ghosts of Greatness": Here's an excerpt from it:
...the faint, otherworldly touches of Isabelle Faust in the middle movement of the Violin Concerto. They are breathtaking as the theme of Schumann’s Ghost-Variations flits through the picture. And just as stunning is the emergence out of this gorgeous but troubled netherworld of Schumann’s mind when the main theme comes back and is all the more invigorating and sunny-optimistic.
And that of a concerto that Clara Schumann, following violinist Joseph Joachim’s advice, suppressed. “Unplayable. Drab. Tiresomely repetitive. Awkward.” was their judgment. It’s half a miracle she didn’t burn it. Still performances remain rare. This disc might be the concerto’s best chance to change this! ...

当音乐从晦暗之处响起,在管弦乐团绵延不绝、悲伤哀戚的旋律陪衬下,似乎在诉说著一部史诗级的悲剧故事。沉重的三连音如同缓慢前行的队伍,也多少暗示著这是一种变相的送葬。轮番交织的合唱代表著世人对不公义的哀嘆折磨,天使般的童声则突显出这场受难有异於往常的刑罚,更是一场非比寻常的牺牲献祭。
音乐随著叙事的进展变得宏伟,内容也随著圣诗唱词的出现逐渐有了轮廓:音乐开场描绘一群士兵押著主耶穌基督,背负十字架前往各各他受刑的场面,围绕追随主耶穌基督的锡安妇女们为此啜泣哀鸣。观望行刑的群眾,不知原因而好奇追问著:背负十架的人是谁?究竟要做啥?为何要如此遭刑?他将要前往何处?紧接著天使从天上歌咏在地上正受苦的那一位,向世人阐明受难的主角就是耶穌基督──上帝的独生子,那圣洁的羔羊为我们罪孽的缘故,坚定走向被钉十架受刑的路,成全上帝永恒救赎的计画。
巴赫(Johann Sebastian Bach,1685~1750年)举世闻名的《马太受难曲》(St. Matthew Passion, BWV244)便是在这种充满戏剧情感、训诲省思的信仰薰陶下,开啟了伟大的序幕。
伟大的信仰音乐作品
《马太受难曲》不仅仅是一齣杰出的教会音乐,更是结合巴赫在信仰、音乐、剧作多方面经验,经年累月熬练下转趋成熟的伟大成就。巴赫在莱比锡先后担任长达27年的教会音乐总监直至逝世(1723~1750年),他一生最重要的作品都是在莱比锡完成,包含《马太受难曲》《约翰受难曲》(St.Johannes Passion, BWV245)《B小调弥撒》(Messein h-moll, BWV232),以及庄严神圣的《圣诞神剧》(Weihnachts-Oratorium, BWV248)均是流传千古的音乐杰作。
《马太受难曲》顾名思义,是以马太福音为脚本,加上圣诗合唱及咏嘆调而成的巨型圣乐作品。整齣神剧宣叙调主要由男高音担任,相当於福音史家(Evangelist)兼剧情旁白的作用。其中经文内容取材自马太福音26~27章,141节经文成为剧情主要骨架,描绘主耶穌预言自己被出卖到被钉十架受难埋葬的故事。
巴赫是德国莱比锡人,长年受路德教派薰陶,因此宣叙调採用马丁路德翻译的德文圣经。咏嘆调与圣诗合唱的剧情脚本,主要出自德国诗人毕康得(Picander)之手(本名为Christian Friedrich Henrici,1700~1764年;Picander是笔名),将过往教会前辈创作的圣诗予以合适穿插排序而成。他曾与巴赫协同创作为数不少清唱剧(Cantata)。此外,巴赫也依圣经提及的人物像主耶穌基督、卖主的犹大、西门彼得、眾门徒们、本丢彼拉多、祭司与长老、闹事起鬨的兵丁,安排了对应的角色与声部。
死而复活的际遇
根据巴赫学者约书亚.里夫金(Joshua Rifkin,1944年~)1975年於牛津大学发表的〈巴赫《马太受难曲》年表〉(The Chronology of Bach's Saint Matthew Passion)一文指出,《马太受难曲》完成於1727年,并於受难日(4月11日)在莱比锡圣多马教堂(St. Thomas church)首演,较《约翰受难曲》大约晚3年的时间。1975年前的研究曾认为可能是在1729年,但现在较少人支持此说。巴赫后来在1736年稍微修改《马太受难曲》,但仍维持两部合唱团、两部管弦乐团、两台管风琴及童声合唱团的配置,演变成今日我们听到的版本。
另外,根据原稿封面,《马太受难曲》的曲名原本应为拉丁文所题(拉丁文:Passion unseres Herrn Jesu Christi nach dem Evangelisten Matthäus),意为「根据福音史家马太记述主耶穌基督的受难」。马太与约翰这两首受难曲也是巴赫唯二完整流传至今的受难曲,都在巴赫死后有很长一段时间几近为人遗忘,甚至在巴赫生前因为过於「歌剧化」的风格,引来不少虔信主义者的不满与抗议,认为巴赫把教会音乐玩过头,过於喧哗扰乱。
巴赫的音乐资产,儘管在他死后曾受到海顿(Joseph Haydn,1732~1809年)、莫札特(Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,1756~1791年)、贝多芬(Ludwigvan Beethoven,1770~1827年)等人的推崇,却迟至1815年后才陆续由音乐学者重新发掘重视,孟德尔颂(JakobLudwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy,1809~1847年)在老师策尔特(Johann Friedrich Zelter,1758~1832年)的指导支持下,并於1829年3月11日重新在莱比锡演出《马太受难曲》,此为巴赫音乐的复甦,受难曲逐渐为世人知晓。巴赫在西洋古典音乐的地位,如同耶穌基督从死里复活一般,最终得到应有的尊崇。
宏大丰富的规模
《马太受难曲》全曲分成两部分,当时两部分之间插入了讲道内容,由教会主牧阐释主耶穌受难的意义,接著再演奏接下来的内容。儘管两首受难曲皆取材自四福音书,由於涵盖经文略有不同,相较於《约翰受难曲》直接从耶穌在客西马尼被捕开始,《马太受难曲》多了耶穌被出卖前的细节,整齣神剧的音乐内容更为丰富。
事实上,整齣《约翰受难曲》的内容,仅仅是《马太受难曲》第一部分的尾段及第二部分而已,《马太受难曲》全曲演完大约需要3小时,由此可见规模之大。第一部分的内容依序是主耶穌预言自己被出卖(马太福音26章1~2节)、祭司长老用计杀主(26章3~5节)、耶穌在伯大尼受膏(26章6~13节)、犹大向祭司长出卖耶穌(26章14~16节)、门徒预备逾越节的筵席(26章16~19节)、耶穌预言犹大出卖祂(26章20~25节)、耶穌亲自设立圣餐礼(26章26~29节)、耶穌预言彼得三次不认祂(26章30~35节)、耶穌在客西马尼的祷告(26章36~39节)、门徒的软弱与耶穌的顺服(26章40~44节)、犹大出卖耶穌故作亲嘴(26章45~50节)、彼得出刀鞘被主阻止(26章51~54节)、耶穌被捕门徒散逃(26章55~56节)。
第一部分的开头与结尾均有一部大合唱作为呼应,其中结尾的大合唱〈啊,人们,悲嘆你的罪何其大〉(O Mensch, bewein’dein.Suendergross),是一首圣诗幻想曲的形式(Chorale fatasie),具有较为自由抒情的风格。起初巴赫在1725年打算将此曲替换为《约翰受难曲》(完成於1724年)的开头音乐,作为作品后续的修改,原本的结尾只打算用一首简短圣诗作结。后来他决定将这首圣诗幻想曲作为结尾音乐,《约翰受难曲》序乐则沿用至今,成为今日样貌。
悲壮安息的句号
《马太受难曲》第二部分,则是从女中音咏嘆调与四声部合唱的提问中,一群忠心跟随主锡安妇女们,得知耶穌遭逮而焦急的情绪开啟了序幕。接著依序是耶穌被押至该亚法的面前(马太福音26章57~58节)、耶穌遭祭司们诬陷受辱(26章59~68节)、彼得三次不认主(26章69~75节)、耶穌被交给彼拉多(27章1~2节)、犹大灭亡的结局(27章3~10节)、耶穌在彼拉多面前受审(27章11~22节)、耶穌被交给人钉十架(27章23~26节)、兵丁戏弄耶穌(27章27~31节)、耶穌与两强盗同被钉十架(27章32~38节)、耶穌被人讥笑不能救自己(27章39~44节)、耶穌之死(27章45~50节)、耶穌断气后的景象(27章51~56节),以及最后耶穌的埋葬与安息(27章57~66节)。
整齣《马太受难曲》结尾跟第一部分相同,照例由一首圣诗大合唱作为结束。结尾的圣诗为己罪自责的悲壮氛围如同曲名〈我们落泪、下跪〉(Wir setzen uns mit Tranen nieder),最终也替整齣神剧划下了安息的句号。

Bach's St. Matthew Passion has long been considered by many to be one of the greatest musical works in history and Bach's largest, most successful and important work. Felix Mendelsohn revived the work in 1829 which resulted in a resurgence and rediscovery of Bach's music that is flourishing to this day.
In my opinion, this is the ultimate recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Everything about it feels and sounds right, from the tempos to the consistently high quality of the soloists. It is a stunningly beautiful and emotionally moving interpretation. Spanning 3 discs, there is an enormous amount of music here. Breathtaking chorals, delightful arias and wonderful instrumentation. This is not only Bach at his best but a new triumph in the long career of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, one of our most important conductors.
The recording itself is perfect, with a rich echo and wonderful stereo placement of the choirs. Packaged as a book with sleeves for the cd's, illustrations, extensive notes and complete libretto (in 3 languages) makes this a superlative presentation. Teldec has not only brought us one of the most beautiful recordings ever made but the inclusion of the cd-rom makes this a must-have. It is an amazing experience to be able to page through the autograph score. Zooming in to view Bach's hand-written notes, the paper sadly deteriorating after centuries, was fascinating and emotionally moving for me. A piece of genius captured and digitized forever, instantly available on our cd players and computers; the new millenium Bach has arrived and it is gorgeous.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代,强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音,依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下,Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过,当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代,在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下,这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换,并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异,大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性,让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音;原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是,这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱,因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下,这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质,找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

Steele-Perkins lives in Dorking, Surrey and is the father of Emma, Kate and Guy. He is also grandfather to William and Ben Mitchell and Isabelle and Zoe Jinadu. In 1961, he married Angela Helen Hall (d. 1991), and in 1995 he married Jane Elizabeth Mary Steele-Perkins.
Career
Steele-Perkins picked up his first trumpet at the age of ten and progressed so quickly that just 6 years later he was playing with the English National Youth Orchestra. On graduating from the Guildhall School of Music, Steele-Perkins began his professional career with the Sadler's Wells Theatre (ENO) 1966-73, before performing with the London Gabrielli Brass Ensemble 1974-84, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 1976-80, English Baroque Soloists 1980-91, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, The King's Consort, 1985–2009, and Retrospect Ensemble, 2009–present. Steele-Perkins's purity of tone and artistic subtlety have received critical acclaim for more than four decades now. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he played a key role in the growth of historically-aware trumpet playing, using a collection of more than 100 pre-1900 mechanised and 'natural' trumpets to bring a brighter, clearer sound to baroque performances. In 2004, Steele-Perkins received the Monk Award[2] for his significant and lifelong contribution to the field of early brass music.
In addition to his work with classical orchestras and period instruments, Steele-Perkins has developed a body of television and film work which is universally recognisable today - most famously he played the theme tune to the popular British television programme Antiques Roadshow, the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only and the The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
Steele-Perkins has also accompanied some of the world's greatest singers, recording Handel's "Let the bright Seraphim" with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and "Eternal Source of Light Divine" with James Bowman. His more recent performances alongside Emma Kirkby, Lynn Dawson, Carolyn Sampson, Bryn Terfel and Lesley Garrett have cemented his international reputation as one of classical music's great ambassadors.
Well known for his enthusiasm and wit, Steele-Perkins is also a popular presenter giving recitals, lectures and masterclasses at schools, colleges and music venues around the world. He also provides advice and guidance when called upon by today's up-and-coming trumpeting talent.

四月中的早晨,笔者拨通了鲍尔珊的手机。彼时她在美国佛罗里达,刚结束一场夜间演出,且正与经纪人驾车奔驰在返回下榻饭店的途中。她的声音虽略显疲惫,但是不减甜美与清脆。虽然访谈在不甚稳定的通讯状态中进行,但是,鲍尔珊与笔者对谈的情绪始终十分高昂!她时而严肃、时而纯真地畅谈著音乐、作品与生活,更多次表达对台北的喜爱与期待。
Q:今年五月是妳第二次造访台北吗?
A:没错,很高兴有机会再次访问台北,上一次我演奏整场的独奏会,并没有太多时间好好地探究这漂亮城市的细节,然而,儘管如此,我所领略的人事物已使我留下了非常美好的印象。台北的风光与人情一直令我难忘,很高兴能再度前往那迷人的城市,还有美丽的国家音乐厅,真的很让人怀念!
Q:此间的爱乐者仍不时谈论到数年前妳在台北演出的独奏会中,令人动容地呈现优雅与美好的小号音乐。本次妳应邀与苏格兰合奏团一起同台献艺,请问你如何看待这次与苏格兰合奏团的合作?
A:我一直认为小号与絃乐团,是一种最富逻辑与艺术美感的组合!尤其是对於早期音乐更是效果完美。
苏格兰合奏团的每一位演奏家除了具有卓越的音乐能力与经验之外,在音乐内在力量的寻求上更有惊人的一致性。非常荣幸与这么杰出的团体合作,相信我们在台北的演出一定会充满乐趣与惊喜,这种火花也是我衷心盼望的。
Q:在公布的曲目里,我注意到妳亲自动手改编了两首巴洛克时期的协奏曲。是否有著特殊的音乐讯息与我们分享?
A:巴洛克时期是小号音乐的黄金年代,身为小号演奏者,可不能等閒视之!因为其中有发掘不尽的音乐宝藏。
此次我选择阿比诺尼(T. Albinoni)《双簧管协奏曲》与韦瓦第《小提琴协奏曲》作为音乐意念的平台,藉由小号音色的元素,试图在原本的音乐织度里增添一些不同的色彩与歌唱性。以小号取代小提琴或双簧管这一件事情并不是最重要的,重要的是音乐的内涵是否依然丰富!
我对於早期乐器自然小号有一份特殊的爱好,花了许多功夫去研究与演奏仿古自然小号,也录制了不少早期音乐作品。其实,我觉得今日的小号演奏者应该多关注一些两、三百年前的乐器与作品风格,因为那些是古典音乐的土壤,许多风格的基本议题,还是要回到它生长的土壤里寻找答案。巴洛克音乐的研究并未随著时代退潮,反而有愈来愈多的新思维。我愈是探究它,就愈是发现小号的音色质地与这些作品惊人的契合,可以完全不困难地表达出巴洛克音乐辉煌与自由的精神!
Q:请问这次妳是选择高音小号来演奏这些作品吗?
A:是的。
Q:那么,妳对现代高音小号演奏内涵上最主要的理念与追求是什么呢?
A:甜美、丰富与充满歌唱性的音色和旋律线一直是我的核心理念。小号是颇为困难的独奏乐器,但若能适当平衡吹奏的压力,你就可以展现出几乎如双簧管一般抒情又甜美的音色,这也是演奏巴洛克音乐很重要的品质。
就如同在刚才提到的观点中所说,我事实上是在演奏自然小号当中,学习到更多抒情的音乐性与吹奏方式。因为自然小号的管身很长,所以它的泛音非常丰富,以现代小号而言,尤其是现代高音小号,就失去了这个优点,因为现代小号的管身相对自然小号而言短了许多。因此,即使现代小号拥有移动快速、音準明确等等诸多优点,我们还是必须儘量试著去寻找那源於自然小号音色传统的丰富泛音,以免失去小号最纯粹、最甜美的音色。
Q:能否谈一谈麦克米伦(J. Macmillan)《六翼天使》Seraph这个作品?据我所知,这是一部题献给妳的作品。
A:这实在是一件非常荣耀且不可思议的事情!麦克米伦大师是英国当代重量级的作曲家,他是一个极为友好而且极有智慧的谦谦君子。而每当我想到,即使有一天我已不存在於这世界上了,然而《六翼天使》却仍能长存於音乐史册之时,我就能重温这奇妙的荣耀感。
Q:是否可谈一谈这部作品的挑战性与其音乐诉求?
A:这个议题很难一语道尽,你必须要亲临现场、用心聆赏之后方能做出独立的艺术判断。但请先容我简单地介绍这首乐曲。首先,在结构上,它仍然维持很传统的三乐章形式。第一乐章是对於古典风格的回顾与展望,例如小号独奏一开始的部分就与海顿《小号协奏曲》有些神似。第二乐章的音乐极为动人,我认为这个乐章是全曲的情感核心之所繫。而第三乐章的音符如舞蹈般飞扬而跳跃,尽情展现小号吹奏技巧。
其次,在实验精神上,这首作品的音乐语法是崭新而不落俗套的,听眾可以一窥大师绝佳的创意。这是一首无论在创作技巧或音乐上都极为出色的作品。
Q:请问在妳繁忙的演奏行程中,要如何让自己保持在巔峰状态?
A:啊!这是一个困难的议题!如果你有好主意请立刻告诉我!我也正在学习之中。但我认为持续不断的呼吸练习确实能帮助我放鬆。
另外一个值得分享的方式是做瑜珈。我在瑜珈课程里得到很多啟发,做瑜珈可以有效地帮助我放鬆情绪与伸展肢体,并且让自己的呼吸更深更稳。
Q:那么,压力问题呢?小号独奏家的工作充满压力,不是吗?
A:你知、我知,追求完美的过程确实充满压力,对小号演奏者或许更是如此。
从某些层面来说,压力也是迈向成功的动力之一,但是你不应该让自己被压垮。因此我也慢慢学著调适自己,对於挫折淡然处之。我想,人生很长,而人生有多长,音乐的道路就有多长!我们不应该让压力凌驾在音乐本质之上。而且,请容我提醒你,瑜珈在紓解压力方面也很有帮助喔!
Q:我相信,音乐不仅是妳的工作更是兴趣吧!但在音乐之外,妳有什么其他的爱好或休閒活动?
A:就像邻家女孩一样,其实我的假日也没什么特别啦,在閒暇的时候,我喜欢和朋友一起跳舞,毕竟,我还年轻嘛!哈哈……另外,我还喜欢到海上驾风帆,我很爱那种天高地阔、投身於大自然的感觉!
Q:若是妳在台北停留期间,有任何空档的话,有哪些台北特色是你最想体验的?
A:这次造访台北,我绝对不能错过品嚐道地台湾美食的机会!太多的朋友告诉我,台湾是美食的天堂,我上次没有很多时间出门探险,这一次一定要努力把握机会!另外,也请告诉所有的朋友,我非常期待台北的演出!

Until the middle of the seventeenth century, the trumpet was essentially a ceremonial instrument, played by soldiers and courtly attendants rather than musicians; it was normally used in trumpet-and-drum bands, in which fanfares and popular tunes were clothed in improvised drone accompaniments. However, German composers such as Michael Praetorius and Heinrich Schütz began to experiment with using trumpets in composed art music around 1620, and soon after 1650 composers began to write concerted sonatas for one or two trumpets with strings and continuo—the repertory that is explored in this disc.
It is normally thought that the first trumpet sonatas were written in Bologna. The earliest printed trumpet sonatas were certainly published in 1665 by Maurizio Cazzati, maestro di capella at San Petronio in Bologna between 1657 and 1671, and the archives at San Petronio contain a large repertory of sonatas, sinfonias and concertos with trumpets, some of which are included on this CD. However, there are trumpet sonatas surviving in manuscripts in northern European libraries that may be just as early or even earlier. A case in point is the sonata by the Roman composer and singer Alessandro Melani. It is found in manuscript at Uppsala in Sweden, probably copied in the 1680s or ’90s though a shorter version for a single trumpet in an Oxford manuscript may go back to the middle of the century. The piece is in an early style and is in C major rather than D major, the standard key for later Italian trumpet music. The piece is also unusual in that the violin parts are in scordatura (using violins tuned b-e'-b'-e'' instead of g-d'-a'-e''). It is not clear whether that was part of Melani’s original conception, though it certainly creates an unusual and attractive sonority.
Alessandro Stradella was another important early composer of trumpet music. Like Melani, he worked in Rome for much of his career, though by 1681, when he wrote the wedding cantata Il barcheggio, he was living in Genoa; he was murdered in a Genoese street the following February and Il barcheggio is said to have been his last work. Its self-contained sinfonia sounds remarkably modern, partly because it uses a bright scoring with three equal treble parts, and partly because it has a clear four-movement structure, with logical harmonic patterns.
Another early trumpet work is the sonata by Andrea Grossi, published in his Op 3 of 1682. It has a some archaic features—for instance, the trumpet tends to alternate rather than combine with the upper strings—though the central adagio, featuring the trumpet in an expressive rather than virtuosic role, is unusual for the time. Little is known about Grossi, though he is known to have been a violinist in the service of the Duke of Mantua around 1680.
The three trumpet works in this programme by Bologna composers offer a sample of forms and styles around 1700. The sonata by Giuseppe Maria Jacchini has the same three-treble scoring as the Stradella sinfonia, though it is more old-fashioned in its structure and musical language: it is relatively short-winded and is a patchwork of six short, contrasted sections. Jacchini was a cellist in the musical establishment at San Petronio from 1680 until his death in 1727, and may have been partly responsible for developing the cello as a solo instrument in concerted sonatas; in the present sonata the central trumpet solo has a soloistic bass part that is clearly intended for his instrument.
In the sonatas by Lazzari and Torelli the cello is given a proper solo accompanied by a separate continuo part; in the Lazzari it has an expressive duet with the first violin, while in the Torelli it has a duet with the trumpet. Both works illustrate the trend around 1700 to more virtuosic and idiomatic writing, and for longer, more logically organized separate movements instead of the old ‘patchwork’ structures. Lazzari was a Franciscan monk who worked in his native Bologna throughout his life, with the exception of two periods spent in Venice. Torelli was also a native of Bologna and worked there until 1696, though he spent most of his later career in Germany.
We do not know where and when Vivaldi wrote his well-known concerto, his only work for trumpets and strings. It is similar in idiom to some Bologna works, though it is in C major rather than D major—a distinctive feature found in other works by Vivaldi with trumpet.
As a contrast to the major-key and generally lively trumpet works, we have included some contemporary examples of four-part string sonatas. The sonata à quattro was less popular at the time than the ubiquitous trio sonata, and is rather neglected today, though it contains a wealth of fine music with a preponderance of introspective, minor-key works—as this CD demonstrates. It is also of interest in that the genre is the true ancestor of the Classical string quartet. The sonatas by Cazzati and Vitali are typical examples of Bolognese four-part sonatas: they are relatively brief, are full of dense counterpoint and have chromatic sections. Vitali was born in Bologna and studied with Cazzati, though he spent most of his career at the Modenese court.
The sonatas by Legrenzi and Scarlatti are also densely contrapuntal, though they are quite different in style. Legrenzi was working in Venice in 1673, when he published his Op 10, and dedicated the collection to the Austrian emperor Leopold I, which is presumably why it includes two sonatas for four viols and continuo. Viols were largely obsolete in Italy at the time, but were still cultivated a good deal in Austria. This is probably why the sonata recorded here was printed in a double-clef format, allowing it to be played in C minor on viols and in E minor by a string quartet. In the work Legrenzi achieves a remarkable synthesis between the contrapuntal idiom of the Renaissance and the chromatic harmony of his own time. We do not know anything about the origins of Alessandro Scarlatti’s work, except that it is found in manuscripts in Paris and Münster as a sonata for string quartet ‘senza cembalo’, but as a concerto with continuo and additional ripieno string parts as the first of a set of Six Concertos published in London around 1740. It is likely, however, that the concerto version is not Scarlatti’s work, and was cobbled together in eighteenth-century England; the additional parts certainly do not add anything to the original.
Two features of this recording are worthy of comment. First, all the works are played one to a part. There is no doubt that the sonata à quattro was essentially thought of as chamber music rather than orchestral music around 1700, even though the genre was often used in church. Furthermore, Richard Maunder has recently argued that the concerto was normally a one-to-a-part genre during the Baroque period; the vast majority of all Baroque concertos survive only in single sets of parts, even in places such as San Petronio in Bologna, where other genres were performed with large forces. Second, it has become fashionable in recent years to use large continuo groups of plucked instruments in all sort of Baroque music. However, the printed and manuscript sources of the repertory recorded here normally only have a single continuo part, most commonly labelled ‘organo’. For this reason we have used a fine Italian-style organ by Goetze and Gwynn for this recording. It is typical of the single-manual instruments used in Italian Baroque churches, and is much more powerful than the small portable chest instruments usually heard in modern performances and recordings.
The lesser-known composers presented here (Melani, Cazzati, Jacchini, Lazzari, Grossi etc) sit happily beside the ‘greats’ of the era (Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Torelli). Before mid-seventeenth century the trumpet was essentially a ceremonial instrument until German composers such as Praetorius and Schütz began to incorporate it into concert works. This idea was soon adopted elsewhere, and Italian sonatas and concertos form much of the baroque repertoire for trumpet.
The accomplished Parley of Instruments play ‘one to a part’, reflecting the combination of forces most likely to have been used at the time these works were first performed.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), based in London, was formed by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1946. In its early days the orchestra secured profitable recording contracts and important engagements including the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the concerts of the Royal Philharmonic Society. After Beecham's death in 1961 the orchestra's fortunes declined steeply; it battled for survival until the mid-1960s, when its future was secured after an Arts Council report recommended that it should receive public subsidy; a further crisis arose in the same era when it seemed that the orchestra's right to call itself "Royal" could be withdrawn.
Since Beecham's death the RPO has had seven chief conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy; from 2009 to the present (at 2016) the incumbent has been Charles Dutoit. Others closely associated with the orchestra have included Sir Charles Groves, Sir Charles Mackerras, Peter Maxwell Davies, Yehudi Menuhin and Leopold Stokowski.
In 2004 the orchestra acquired its first permanent London base, at the new Cadogan Hall in Chelsea. The RPO also gives concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and venues around the UK and other countries. From its earliest days the orchestra has been active in the recording studios, making film soundtracks and numerous gramophone recordings; many of the LP recordings conducted by Beecham and others have been reissued on compact disc.

Wendy Warner is a magnificent cellist, and in Irina Nuzova she has found a keyboard partner who matches her in passion, elegance, and imagination. The result is as beautiful a chamber music recital as we have any right to expect, with the music intelligently organized to make an extremely satisfying full program. Miaskovsky's lovely sonata, written for Rostropovich in the late 1940s, can sound monotonous, with two moderately-paced movements preceding the lively finale. Not here. Warner and Nuzova time each movement perfectly and find so much variety of phrasing and timbre that there's never a dull moment. Instead, we focus on the music's abundance of soulful lyricism before the brilliant finale brings the piece to a virtuosic close.
Between this work and the Rachmaninov, Warner and Nuzova offer three charming short pieces: Scriabin's Etude Op. 8 No. 11, transcribed by Piatigorsky; Schnittke's Nostalgica; and the Adagio from Prokofiev's Ten Pieces from Cinderella. They make an arresting and highly varied assortment, but it's the Rachmaninov that's the real prize.
Just to hear the wonderful use of rubato at the opening is a treat. Warner has a real gift among cellists: a low register that never sounds like the proverbial dying cow, and a remarkable evenness of timbre throughout her range. Nuzova, for her part, glitters in the scherzo and finale, but never overpowers her colleague. Perfectly balanced engineering puts you in the same room as the players. A stunning release.

I'm generally suspicious of national stereotypes but this new CD recording of cello and piano works by Russian composers illuminates and gives life to the concept known as the "Russian soul." The recording by Chicago-based Cedille Records brings together cellist Wendy Warner and pianist Irina Nuzova in a collection by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Scriabin and Schnittke. But it's the opening work by a composer I had never heard of, Nikolai Miaskovsky (1881-1950) that was the real headliner for me.
Miaskovsky, who served on the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory from 1921 until his death, composed 27 symphonies, however he never won the fame of his contemporaries, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His work is little performed today. But from the first notes of his Sonata No. 2 for Cello and Piano, Op 81, which opens this CD, one is struck by the lyrical beauty and deep melancholy of the piece which seems to express something quintessentially Russian. It's simply a gorgeous and moving piece of music that has never before been recorded on American soil by an American artist by an American label. How exciting to discover a new landmark of late Russian romanticism, which alone is worth the price of this recording!
The very useful program notes which accompany this CD includes an essay by the pianist, Nuzova who grew up in Russia but moved to the United States as a teenager to escape anti-Semitism. The sonata, she says, has a pervasive, nostalgic quality that is subtle and subdued in its expression. Nuzova says the music reminds her of a poem by Konstantin Balmont (1867-1942) called "Wordlessness" and she includes an English translation.
Let me just quotes one stanza:
"The reeds are unstirring, the sedge doesnn't quiver.
Deep quiet. And wordlessness, utterly peaceful.
The meadows spread out faraway and forever.
In everything - weariness, muteness and bleakness."
The poem is a perfect fit for the music.
Cellist Wendy Warner, also has a Russian connection. As a student at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, she had the rare opportunity to learn from the legendary Russian virtuoso and human rights activist Mstislav Rostropovich.
She and Nuzova, both strikingly attractive in the cover photo, meld together seamlessly in this CD. They also give us a witty, minor-key minuet by Schnittke, a Prokofiev transcription from "Cinderella," an encore piece by Scriabin and Rachmaninov's sprawling Cello Sonata, which to my mind is not one of his most inspired creations but which is delivered with utter conviction and intensity.
Cedille has been around for 20 years, devoted to showcasing classical artists from the Chicago area. We must be thankful to the company for bringing us two undiscovered gems - the Miaskovsky and the beautiful poem by Bal'mont.

Sensational violinist Nicola Benedetti returns with a riveting recording of Shostakovich’s monumental Violin Concerto (No. 1). This new recording follows Benedetti’s chart-topping success with Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy (Homecoming, 2014) and Korngold’s Violin Concerto (Silver Violin, 2012).
Benedetti’s own encounter with Russian music-making began in her childhood, the seriousness and intensity making a powerful impact on the young violinist: “I was thrust into a different world” says Nicola, “a little terrifying, extremely demanding but so loving, so warm”.
Together with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kirill Karabits, the dark, introspective Shostakovich Violin Concerto is brought to life in a compelling performance packed full of energy, powerful torment, and breath-taking passion. The demonic scherzo notches up intensity; the passionate third movement – possibly one of the finest in the canon of violin concertos – has a grand magnificence; and the astonishing Burlesque rounds off this visceral recording.
A work with a tormented history itself – the hostile political environment of Russian state censorship at the time of composition in the 1940’s meant that Shostakovich kept the concerto unpublished until after Stalin’s death – it was first performed in 1955 by David Oistrakh, and immediately highly regarded internationally.
Programmed alongside Shostakovich’s assertive, uncompromising masterpiece, is Glazunov’s bold, colourful Violin Concerto. A late-Romantic work, the Glazunov is notable for its lyricism; Benedetti’s generous, radiant performance is uplifting and finely crafted.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), based in London, was formed by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1946. In its early days the orchestra secured profitable recording contracts and important engagements including the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the concerts of the Royal Philharmonic Society. After Beecham's death in 1961 the orchestra's fortunes declined steeply; it battled for survival until the mid-1960s, when its future was secured after an Arts Council report recommended that it should receive public subsidy; a further crisis arose in the same era when it seemed that the orchestra's right to call itself "Royal" could be withdrawn.
Since Beecham's death the RPO has had seven chief conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy; from 2009 to the present (at 2016) the incumbent has been Charles Dutoit. Others closely associated with the orchestra have included Sir Charles Groves, Sir Charles Mackerras, Peter Maxwell Davies, Yehudi Menuhin and Leopold Stokowski.
In 2004 the orchestra acquired its first permanent London base, at the new Cadogan Hall in Chelsea. The RPO also gives concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and venues around the UK and other countries. From its earliest days the orchestra has been active in the recording studios, making film soundtracks and numerous gramophone recordings; many of the LP recordings conducted by Beecham and others have been reissued on compact disc.

Georg Philipp Telemann was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg,Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann.

We can appreciate today that the Baroque era contained many geniuses, each of whose worth did not preclude the value of the others. During his lifetime, however, Telemann shone as the most prolific (over 6,000 works!) and highly regarded German composer, even surpassing his friends J.S. Bach and Handel in renown.
Telemann was, for the most part, musically self-taught. He played a host of instruments, learned the writer's art by studying the scores of other composers, and worked in almost every genre of the day, including operas, oratorios and passions, cantatas, sonatas, songs, motets, quartets and quintets. Though knowledgeable about the "learned" style of Baroque music, Telemann embraced and assisted in developing the style galant, where melody and simpler textures predominated.
A leading force in Germany's musical life, Telemann helped found three colegia musica (forerunners of the modern concert societies) and instigated public concerts in churches and sacred music performances in secular environments. He always held several posts concurrently. When he settled in Hamburg (1721), he was Town Cantor (responsible for supervising grammar school music and the directorship of five churches) and director of the Opera. Constantly endeavoring to bring music to a wider audience, Telemann engraved his own compositions at a time when publishing in Germany was in its infancy. his fights with the Hamburg municipal press (he was also a lawyer) led to the development of German copyright laws. At the same time, he was Kapellmeister at Large for both the Margrave of Bayreuth and the Duke of Saxe-Eisenach, whom he also served as an economic and political correspondent. He was a poet, who wrote texts for some of his own works; a botanist, who shared his enthusiasms with Handel, and a three-time autobiographer, who also wrote treatises on theory and ornamentation. He founded the first music journal in Germany.
An innovator and voracious assimilator, Telemann commanded a wealth of styles ranging from French, Italian and German Baroque to Rococo and, in some instances, early Classical practice. Not shackled by rigid formulas, his variety in form and orchestration, spirited rhythms (with inspired touches of syncopation) and constant development of ideas are the hallmarks of his originality and freshness.
The french influence predominates in the Suite in E Minor (whose first chord is E Major) with its Lullian French overture, stylized dance movements and use of an extra-musical title, the Carillon.
Telemann employed a variety of forms, number of movements and styles in his concertos, and his themes usually evince a remarkable evolutionary use of motives. For example, in the three-movement Flute Concerto in G Major, the opening nine measures of the da capo Allegro ma non troppo contain all the motivic fragments, that, rearranged, altered, extended and reorchestrated, make up the whole movement - a perfect complement of contrast and cohesiveness. Not without humor, Telemann signed this work "Signore Melante," an anagram for his name.
In the four-movement D-Major Concerto (beginning with a lilting minuet) and in the five-movement E-Minor Concerto, there is increased interplay between the flute and violin(s). In the latter Concerto, the orchestra shines alone in the scampering Presto.
The seemingly endless inventiveness found in Telemann's spirited fast movements is mirrored in his supremely lyrical slow movement,s eacha gem in its own right. Thus, it is easy to explain Telemann's popularity in the eighteenth (and twentieth) century: His works are extremely beautiful and exceptionally well-crafted -- masterpieces that stand with the best of his era and that can be admired and loved by everyone from amateurs to astute musicians.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代,强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音,依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下,Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过,当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代,在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下,这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换,并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异,大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性,让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音;原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是,这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱,因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下,这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质,找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

  专辑录音由她与指挥卡拉毕兹及伯恩茅斯交响乐团共同演出,黑暗而内省的萧士塔高维契小提琴协奏曲,在令人信服的演奏中获得了生命,充满能量与磨难以及令人屏息的热情。恶魔般的第二乐章-詼谐曲,将乐曲的力度推向高峰。深情的第三乐章则表现出盛大的辉煌效果,最后就在令人惊嘆的滑稽曲中结束。
  萧士塔高维契小提琴协奏曲之创作曾经历一段充满磨难的历史背景:一九四〇年代,俄国不公的审查制度,迫使萧士塔高维契选择在史达林死后才将乐谱出版。作品於1955年由小提琴家大卫・欧依史特拉夫(David Oistrakh)首演,并立即获得国际乐坛的高度重视。
  除了萧士塔高维契坚毅不妥协的作品之外,本集另收录一首较少被录制,但却又是每个小提琴演奏者必须学习的葛拉兹诺夫协奏曲,此曲有著与柴可夫斯基小提琴协奏曲相仿又相异的俄国风格;它的曲风大胆,色彩豔丽,是一首具有后期浪漫主义色彩的作品,其中的抒情性特别值得注意。班乃德提的演奏可谓精雕细琢,且感染力十足。

Sensational violinist Nicola Benedetti returns with a riveting recording of Shostakovich’s monumental Violin Concerto (No. 1). This new recording follows Benedetti’s chart-topping success with Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy (Homecoming, 2014) and Korngold’s Violin Concerto (Silver Violin, 2012).
Benedetti’s own encounter with Russian music-making began in her childhood, the seriousness and intensity making a powerful impact on the young violinist: “I was thrust into a different world” says Nicola, “a little terrifying, extremely demanding but so loving, so warm”.
Together with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kirill Karabits, the dark, introspective Shostakovich Violin Concerto is brought to life in a compelling performance packed full of energy, powerful torment, and breath-taking passion. The demonic scherzo notches up intensity; the passionate third movement – possibly one of the finest in the canon of violin concertos – has a grand magnificence; and the astonishing Burlesque rounds off this visceral recording.
A work with a tormented history itself – the hostile political environment of Russian state censorship at the time of composition in the 1940’s meant that Shostakovich kept the concerto unpublished until after Stalin’s death – it was first performed in 1955 by David Oistrakh, and immediately highly regarded internationally.
Programmed alongside Shostakovich’s assertive, uncompromising masterpiece, is Glazunov’s bold, colourful Violin Concerto. A late-Romantic work, the Glazunov is notable for its lyricism; Benedetti’s generous, radiant performance is uplifting and finely crafted.
