The title Nuances is uncommunicative and has nothing to do with the ballet of that name assembled from Scriabin's music by composer Alexander Nemtin. Instead, this recital by pianist and Internet marketing phenomenon Valentina Lisitsa represents a very specific kind of program, and it's good to see her essay something like this rather than the mainstream repertory she has generally done thus far. What Lisitsa offers here is a recital that focuses on a composer's youth, and the signs it may offer of that composer's maturity. Much of the music here comes from Scriabin's teenage years, and was never published. It's heavily modeled on Chopin, but keep your ears pricked and you'll hear all kinds of hints of the later Scriabin. It's not a question of chromaticism, for Chopin at his most experimental outdid anything in all but the last few pieces here. Instead, Scriabin experiments with blocks of static texture, with decorations Chopin would not have used, with little unanswered harmonic questions. Sample the second of the Two Impromptus, Op. 14 (track 16), for a piece that's right on the edge of what Scriabin would soon accomplish, some examples of which close out the program. Lisitsa doesn't do anything spectacular here, but the originality of the concept is notable, and she conveys the just slightly inward atmosphere of the earlier pieces effectively. Decca's Britten-Pears studio sound is very well suited to the project.
PUSHING BOUNDARIES: LISITSA EXPLORES THE PIANISTIC WORLD OF ALEXANDER SCRIABIN
Valentina Lisitsa, who has a formidable track record when it comes to mining the works of left-field composers, turns her attention to Alexander Scriabin with her new release, Nuance. While Scriabin was dramatically pushing at musical boundaries by the end of his short life, his early works are suffused with a fresh innocence – this selection from his lesser-known piano repertoire reflects the striking stylistic differences that characterised his all too brief career. Marking the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death in 1915 at the age of 43, Nuance will be released in October.
This is not Lisitsa’s first venture into Scriabin on disc. She featured on the recording of his complete works, released on Decca in April, earning this tribute from Audiophile Audition: “Lisitsa is an especially fine pianist who captures the special Scriabin feeling in her performances, which combine sensitivity and expressiveness with a command of dynamics.” She now returns to the enigmatic Russian Symbolist master after acclaimed albums devoted to the similarly iconoclastic Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, and to challenging Études by Schumann and Chopin.
Scriabin’s early music, delightfully easy on the ear, shows the influence of Chopin, which explains the profusion of such titles as Mazurka, Polonaise, Impromptu, Nocturne, Scherzo, Prélude, Étude and Waltz. The digital version of Nuance includes four extra tracks: the Étude op.49, no.1, the Mazurka in B minor, Feuille d’album in F sharp major and what is possibly the first recording of the Duett in D minor for two sopranos and piano.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), based in London, was formed by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1946. In its early days the orchestra secured profitable recording contracts and important engagements including the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the concerts of the Royal Philharmonic Society. After Beecham's death in 1961 the orchestra's fortunes declined steeply; it battled for survival until the mid-1960s, when its future was secured after an Arts Council report recommended that it should receive public subsidy; a further crisis arose in the same era when it seemed that the orchestra's right to call itself "Royal" could be withdrawn.
Since Beecham's death the RPO has had seven chief conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy; from 2009 to the present (at 2016) the incumbent has been Charles Dutoit. Others closely associated with the orchestra have included Sir Charles Groves, Sir Charles Mackerras, Peter Maxwell Davies, Yehudi Menuhin and Leopold Stokowski.
In 2004 the orchestra acquired its first permanent London base, at the new Cadogan Hall in Chelsea. The RPO also gives concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and venues around the UK and other countries. From its earliest days the orchestra has been active in the recording studios, making film soundtracks and numerous gramophone recordings; many of the LP recordings conducted by Beecham and others have been reissued on compact disc.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代，强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音，依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下，Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过，当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代，在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下，这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换，并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异，大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性，让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音；原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是，这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱，因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下，这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质，找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

巴洛克时期
大约在西元1600～1750年间称为巴洛克时期（Baroque Ages）。

前面介绍的vihuela是较接进於现代吉它的琴之一，不过只在西班牙才能看得到也较同时期的Lute更为盛行,但只维持了大约100年。vihuela和Lute算是在文艺复兴，巴洛克时期的产物，约在16到17世纪间，到了巴洛
克时期之后，便是鲁特琴的时代。
巴洛克时代一般著名的便是韦瓦第（Antonio Vivaldi，1675～1741，义大利）巴哈（Johann Sebastian Bach， 1685～1750，德国）韩德尔（George Frideric Handel，1685～1759，德国）。而巴哈有许多写给鲁特琴（Lute）的组曲，因此又特别重要。
巴哈最著名的便是12平均律，在这个时期开始有人思考音乐的结构，所谓对位、和声的观念是由此时开始的，此时的音乐旋律通常短巧简明，多为四小节或八小节。曲调多浅显易懂而丰富，且节奏单调不会改变。注重和谐的美感，在对位变化中的和声，仍以大、小调的和弦感为依归。因而此时期乐曲，大、小调的感觉很明确。

Khatia Buniatishvili's new album, "Motherland," is an intimate quest encompassing solo piano works from Bach to Pärt and from Brahms to Kancheli, in which the themes of longing for home, the merriment of a folk dance and the eternal cycle of growth and decay are apparent. These are quiet, dreamy pieces, most of them not written for the concert hall, but expressing a personal journey for peace and a protected place. Spanning a broad stylistic and historical range, Motherland juxtaposes the happy lightness of a "Slavonic Dance" by Dvo ák and the melancholy of Grieg's lyrical "Homesickness" and contrasts the elegant gaiety of Mendelssohn's "Song without Words" (Op. 67/2) with the graceful introspection of Liszt's "Lullaby." Classics of the Romantic piano repertoire such as Chopin's Étude in C-sharp minor (Op. 25/7) and Brahms's "Intermezzo" (Op. 117/2) are embedded between Bach's cantata "Sheep May Safely Graze" and Arvo Pärt's musical dedication "For Alina."
Khatia Buniatishvili has been described by The Independent as "the young Georgian firebrand." At the age of only 26 years, this Tblisi-born pianist has already achieved an exceptional maturity of interpretation and a distinctive artistic approach that make her playing unmistakable. As she has demonstrated in her critically acclaimed albums of the keyboard music of Liszt and Chopin, Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili is a stunning virtuoso with impressive skills and her dynamic playing compels listening. However, for her 2014 Sony album, Motherland, she finds subtle expressions in her favorite character pieces, and none of them could be considered showstoppers. Most of the selections reflect calm and intimate moods, typified by Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze, Tchaikovsky's Autumn Song, Debussy's Clair de lune, and Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte, while the liveliest pieces, which include Mendelssohn's Song Without Words in F sharp minor, György Ligeti's Musica Ricercata No. 7, Dvorák's Slavonic Dance in E minor, and Scarlatti's Sonata in E major, offer rather modest displays of technique. Instead of dazzling her listeners, Buniatishvili is putting forward her personal, private side in this understated program, and the key to her selections is the sense of yearning that these pieces evoke. The most passionate outpouring of emotion comes in her own arrangement of Vaguiorko ma, a Georgian folk song that surely must hold a special place in her emotional world. Because this is a gentle and poignant album, listeners may find it is best appreciated in a quiet space with few distractions.

Because Khatia Buniatishvili always wanted her debut recording to be a portrait of Franz Liszt, it is fortuitous that this album was released in time for the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. This CD/DVD combo introduces the Georgian pianist in a manner that seems half a fulfillment of a fantasy and half a kitschy marketing ploy for Sony, overdone in its packaging, photography, and booklet. But the window-dressing should take nothing away from Buniatishvili's playing, which is wholly convincing in its power, incisiveness, fluidity, and clarity. It is evident that she is committed to Liszt with passionate intensity, and her playing lacks nothing in the necessary expressive range, from the dreamy delicacy of the Liebesträum in A flat major to the towering grandeur of the Sonata in B minor, with every nuanced possibility in between. The program is quite accessible, with these famous pieces and others, such as the Mephisto Waltz No. 1, La lugubre gondola, and the Prelude & Fugue in A minor (after Bach). Buniatishvili clearly understands that Liszt's music was about a lot more than flashy runs and clangorous octaves, and that there is a subtle creative aspect of his work that influenced a century of Romantic music and is still being felt today. Having Buniatishvili as an interpreter is certainly good for the Liszt revival, and it, in turn, should be quite helpful for her career, despite the label's gilding of the lily.

There’s no doubting Khatia Buniatishvili’s talent. The Georgian pianist has an imposing technique at her disposal and, when she puts her mind to it, the ability to produce moments of insight and refined sensibility. She is in her late 20s now, at a time in her life when most pianists are turning early promise into real achievement, but to judge by the rash, immature playing in her latest London appearance, Buniatishvili is still some way from doing that.
Her programme – Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and a sequence of Liszt – was clearly designed for effect, and to have her fans on their feet and cheering at the end; predictably, they obliged. Pictures, though, had no shape at all, with the slower movements ponderously slow – Il Vecchio Castello was interminable – and faster ones lightning fast, so that they became trivialised, and Buniatishvili kicked up such a storm in The Hut on Fowl’s Legs that the dramatic effect of the segue into the final Great Gate of Kiev, one of the clinching moments in the whole work, was fatally undermined.
That tendency to extremes – the thinking that ever faster, ever louder, is automatically the best way to go – ran through the Liszt pieces too. Three studies from different sets, La Leggierezza, Feux Follets and La Campanella, at least allowed everyone to admire the pearly evenness of Buniatishvili’s fingering, but apart from a rather unconvincing Liebesträume to begin, around them were pieces that encouraged her to be as noisy as possible: the first Mephisto Waltz (not insidious, just rowdy), the Grand Galop Chromatique (turned into a low-grade circus act) and the second Hungarian Rhapsody – played, of course, in Vladimir Horowitz’s version, which adds tweaks and further elaborations to Liszt’s original. The good news is that the piano survived it all intact; the bad is that on the question of whether Buniatishvili can ever be a serious artist, the jury is very much still out.

即使是出现在上个世纪的五十年代，强调身历其境的Mercury Living Presence系列录音，依旧是唱片史上无法取代的经典之作。在与制作人法恩共同创立Mercury奇迹的威玛·柯札特·法恩监督下，Mercury珍贵的一百多张录音曾经在一九九〇年代重获新生命。不过，当时磁带转录的技术还没有完全成熟。由于现代能做到的磁带转录成CD的采样率解析度已经远高于一九九〇年代，在伦敦艾比路录音室工程师安德鲁·华尔特与威玛·柯札特·法恩的儿子汤玛斯·法恩密切合作下，这些磁带全程以96kHz / 24bit的格式转换，并且去除杂音与磁带之间的声波差异，大大提高以单声道录音的管弦乐专辑可听性，让它的听觉效果更接近Mercury后来的立体声录音；原有的立体声录音则透露出前所未有的深度与真实感。
值得注意的是，这一套专辑包含了十张过去从未发行CD的专辑。由于这十张专辑原有母带的磁带已经非常脆弱，因此没有被列入1990年代的重新发行系列中。在新技术的帮助下，这些珍贵的声音得以消除后来出现的声音变质，找回原本明亮清晰的面貌。

舒曼的想像力，带有一种浪漫时代的特质，就筑基在E．T．A霍夫曼和尚保罗这两位浪漫文学家的奇幻世界中，他不时从文学和诗词的世界中借取灵感和意念，也难怪，他在一八四一年二月间完成的第一号交响曲，会有那么充满标题性色彩的来历。据克拉拉所言，这部作品最初是有感於阿道夫布特格所写的一首春日诗而来，原先每个乐章开头还都带有一段具描述性的标题，后来舒曼将这些标题删去，因为他不想这些标题误导了人们，不把这首交响曲视为同於贝多芬体制的纯粹音乐。至於第四号交响曲则在他完成第一号不久，并於当年九月十三日献给妻子克拉拉当作生日礼物，不过在一八五一年又经过大幅修订，照理此曲应该是第二号交响曲，却因为这次修订，而变成了第四号交响曲。之后舒曼一度精神崩溃，因此中断了交响曲写作四年，一直到一八四五年才恢复创作，这就是被列为第二号交响曲的作品，此曲创作过程中，舒曼一直抱怨听到声音，但其实是他的幻听，因此可以说是他所有作品中最有他精神失常特质的一部作品。舒曼最后一部完成的交响曲，是后来被人称为「莱茵」的第三号交响曲，是舒曼献给他祖国、描绘莱茵河畔悠久历史和旖旎风光的杰作。
瑞士法语区管弦乐团成立至今即将届满一百年，该团成立的前五十年都是由创办人安塞美担任指挥和总监，但因为二战期间许多欧洲一流乐手避居此地，包括福特万格勒等人，因此吸收了邻近德国和法国非常优秀的演奏传统。本片指挥乔登是在一九八五到九七年间担任其总监，接替了前一任的大师霍斯特史坦，刚在零六年以七四岁过世的他，本身就是瑞士人，但以詮释德国浪漫曲目、尤其是华格纳闻名，这也是为什么他会在一九九零年被ERATO相中灌录这份录音的原因。这份录音也是瑞士法语区管弦乐团希望藉助乔登之手，让他们甩掉一向被人与法国音乐联想在一起的包袱。

I came to Schumann's symphonies late (not the Spring, which I listened to and loved in a viscerally exciting performance by conductor-whose-name-escapes-me) via Kubelik's wonderfully crafted Munich set. I've been particularly interested in the 2nd symphony in the last few months because it seems to me a work that is forever skirting the penumbra of greatness. Frustratingly, I could not fathom why. Was it perhaps because the adagio takes such expression that it wrenches itself away from the rest of the symphony, and leaves what remains poorer? And why is that brilliantly enigmatic scherzo so fragmentary, somehow incomplete?
Chamber Orchestra of Europe
Biography
The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is one of the top smaller orchestral ensembles in the world. It was formed in 1981 by a group of young professional musicians based in Europe. At that time an international trend was developing to establish permanent orchestras of between 30 and 60 members, smaller than the usual symphony orchestra, but the right size to play many Classical- and Baroque-era works and numerous works for smaller orchestras composed in the twentieth century. Although many of the founding members have gone on to important positions in standard orchestras and prominence as solo artists, most of them have remained with the COE since then. The orchestra's schedule usually calls for 150 days a year of commitment, including rehearsals, appearances at major music festivals, individual concerts, and limited tours (mostly in Europe, but sometimes to North America and Japan). The orchestra is a self-governing organization. Its 50 members elect, annually, a four-man executive committee, who are responsible for business and artistic management of the COE, together with a chairman and general manager. There is no principal conductor, music director, or artistic adviser. Instead, its members bring their widely diverse backgrounds to their gatherings and make suggestions as to repertory. The COE, however, commonly performs with a conductor. A stellar array of maestros have led them. The ones most closely linked to them are Claudio Abbado and Nikolas Harnoncourt (who have recorded a Schubert and a Beethoven symphony cycle, respectively, with the COE). However, other famous conductors, including Pierre Boulez, Christoph Eschenbach, Heinz Holliger, Paavo Berglund, Edo de Waart, and Herbert Blomstedt, have appeared on the COE's podium, in just one typical year. The COE records frequently and won Gramophone Record of the Year awards three times, for the above-mentioned Beethoven and Schubert cycles and for their work on Abbado's recording of Rossini's Il viaggio à Reims. It is not identified with a particular city, but has a working relationship with a number of orchestras and rehearsal-performance venues, including the Kammermusiksaal der Philharmonie in Berlin, Ferrara Musica in Italy, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and the Styriarte Festival in Graz and the Salzburg Festival, where the members often assemble to work and perform.
I use up so many words because this present recording like few I have heard lifted the veil from over my eyes. This is a dazzlingly illuminating performance of the second (I have not yet heard the first, so cannot comment). Harnoncourt's performances are most usually reviewed in terms of cliches (breathless, idiosyncratic, eccentric, tautly performed, etc, etc). Banish all that! I can only say that this is a great feat of intellectual vision. Harnoncourt brings a profound insight and artistic conception to this work. It is, of course, played with deep commitment and understanding by this vastly under-rated orchestra.

Grimaud 现在是DG 的当家花旦，听说她在DG的CD 的销售已经超过八十五万张，这一套极有可能把她拉近百万会的会员。她也是有性格之人，和Abbado 合作灌录Mozart，在选择演奏版本时刻，居然和老人家反面，各持其见，Grimaud 坚持要用Horowitz 的版本，结果把Abbado 激怒，随著跑到HM 和 Faust 灌录了Beethoven 小提琴协奏曲，相信两人大概不会再度合作。所以套新的Brahms ，指挥是新进的Andris Nelsons。 Nelsons 也不是名不经传，这位下届波士顿交响乐团的音乐总监，应该是旭日东昇，前途无限。
Brahms 的钢协不是等閒作品，公认为是钢琴协奏曲曲目的巔峰之作，又继续有技术难度之餘，要能够把Brahms 的复杂感情表达，优美和激情兼备。记忆中强如Richter 也只是灌录一首。这一首也是被许多人认为是男性天下的曲目，女性钢琴家灌录Brahms 可以说是寥寥可数，记忆中只有Argerich 的第二，和Mercury 时代的Gina Gaucher 。
这些热门曲目，手上多年积累下来的也不少，聆听这几张之前，我喜爱的版本是Gilels/Jochum，Leon Fleisher/Serkin/Szell，和近年的Freire/Chailly。
CD 的介绍里面，有访问Grimaud 的对话，主要谈Grimaud 对Brahms 音乐的看法，和两首协奏曲的体会。建议大家在听之前，看看这一份介绍，特别是她对第一协奏曲的看法。
她用两张Brahms 的肖像作为比较，一张是Brahms 年青时影子风发，另一张相隔二十多年，是晚年满面鬍子，带著沧桑。代表乐曲写作时候的Brahms，也代表这两首乐曲。 Grimaud 体会的PC No。1是Brahms 的自我描述和Schumann 之死而引发，三乐章分别代表Schumann 的一生的折腾和挣扎，像祈告般对Clara 的爱慕，第三乐章的Resurrection。第二钢协Grimaud 则认为是Brahms 的回忆录，充满记忆之中的酸甜苦辣，思潮起落，感情丰富。
听了两三次，Grimaud 的Brahms的确我我想像中不一样，她的第一的开始我觉得就没有像Gilels 般的气概万千，Nelsons 採取的速度也较慢，我认为Grimaud 在选择了Sentiment 和年青的激情之中选择了前者，她的技术不容置疑，做句也非常精妙，她的第二乐章，就像一首情歌，充满温情和感情，Brahms的含著眼泪的微笑，抒情的速度，听完这两乐章，差点忘记了是听Brahms，第三乐章，两人採取的则为较为传统的速度和节奏，Grimaud 的琴採取主动，有接近男性的雄抖抖的气势，Nelsons是亦步亦催，让乐曲在传统的方法来结束，好一个不一样的演绎。
若果你认同Grimaud 的看法，这是一个不错的演绎，这里Grimaud 是天上的月亮，Nelsons 充其量只能星星而已，BRSO 在他领导下，适如其份的把一个抒情的Brahms 演出，表现也不错，但乐曲里面乐队也在sentimentl 和 attack 中，选择了前者，我认为Brahms 的音乐的心情复杂，年青的激情，略略不够。
这Brahms No 1 录音是现场音乐会录音，是水準之作，但是听得出不是一场音乐会，而是两场音乐会中选段落编辑而成，细心听会听出剪接之处和偶然鼓声位置移动。
拿了同一样Helene Grimaud 的Brahms 钢协第一的Esoteric SACD 比较。
这是Grimaud 1997二十六岁时候的演奏，指挥是Kurt Sanderling，乐队是Berlin Staakapelle。
在钢琴部分，Grimaud 基本上对Brahms 钢协第一的看法没有太多的改变，她的Brahms No 1 两者都是较缓慢的速度，偏向Sentimental 的版本。当然两者也有分别，这二十多年听到Grimaud 的琴声从朝气勃勃的，到成熟而自信，touch 更为delicate，更放胆施展自身的见解，第二乐章，旧版本直率，新版本更有女性婉约。整体是黑的更黑，白的更白。当年的Grimaud，是要证实给世界她不止是位 “French Pianist”，演绎里面还有德国味道，在混点法国浪漫。Kurt Sanderling 这位资深德国指挥和年青Grimaud 较为旗鼓相当，只是终结段落稍稍鬆懈而已。
谈演绎，两者之间，我反而喜欢1997 年的Helene Grimaud 那一份朝气，和德法的融合。二十多年前，二十六岁的年纪，已经对Brahms 音乐有如此理解，技术有如此水平，非常难得。
录音方面，DG的水平颇高，但是一山还有一山高。Esoteric 的工程师再一次把一贯的精品式的加工显示，把这录音拉高一线，乐队的弦乐更幼滑细致，铜管更光辉，没有原版不能比较，钢琴声音也能够平衡鏗鏘和钢琴的木槌敲琴弦的要求，不用AB比较，就知道加工品为何那么贵。你可以说是味精，但就是是大厨，也要用点味精。
Grimaud 的Brahms 钢协第一，不管哪个版本，都是有争议性的。但是撇开传统，想到当时的Brahms被Schumann 之死的影响，眾所周知他对Clara的爱慕，这演绎的也不是太过分，不管如何，是值得一听的演绎，起码是女性钢琴家回应乐迷说这乐曲属於男性天下的答案。也是到目前成功的Brahms 钢协第一的女性版。

This powerhouse of a concerto can withstand a number of approaches, given its combination of drama and lyricism. Ms. Grimaud has taken it on with the objective of exploring its more hidden treasures. It's rare for a record collector of 35 years to hear a fresh approach to such a classic (i've heard Serkin/Szell; Fleisher/Szell; Kovacevich/Sawallisch; Cliburn/Leinsdorf and Gilels/Boehm and found great value in the approach of each, but this recording, made in performance in Berlin's Schauspielhaus is something quite special. In her jacket notes, she states her understanding of the piece as a response on Brahms' part to the incredible drama he faced at the loss of his best friend and mentor Robert Schumann to due mental illness (likely he was bi-polar) and his eventual death. This explains the intense craggy drama of the opening movement followed by the lovely resignation of the slow movement and the restored life-affirmation of the finale. There is likely a great deal of the composer's fondness for Clara Schumann in the slow movement. His unrequited love for her shows itself in a number of his piano works, not least of all the opus 119 pieces.
She takes, like Gilels and Gould, an extremely slow tempo in the first movement, balancing its dramatic and lyric elements beautifully while allowing the conductor, Sanderling, the opportunity to distinguish various inner voices and explore various instrumental balances and sonorities in long held passages and chords. The recording balance is amazingly good for an "in-performance" recording. The orchestra which serves in the pit of the Berlin Staatsoper is well accustomed to providing accompaniment, playing with a smooth blended sound that while not quite up to the high standard of the Berlin Philharmonic will still do quite nicely.
The slow movement plays like a meditation with various soloists in the orchestra responding intimately and spontaneously to the pianist. After all the slow reflection of the first two movements, the finale is played at a more conventional lively tempo in keeping with the pianist's interpretation of this concerto as a kind of requiem expressing resolution and life affirmation at its end.
The overall perspective of the recording gives a sense of being somewhat recessed in mid hall with a nicely blended sound as opposed to surgical detail. That may be why some reviewers note the subdued timpani and horns, although I find the conductor has given them sufficient prominence. It's simply a more central-european approach. I highly recommend this to those who love this concerto and wish to explore various approaches to it. This one is quite unusual but rewarding in what it reveals. I note some complaints about the conductor but Grimaud chose him particularly for this concert and recording based on prior collaboration and admits in her notes, that she was fortunate in that he agreed with her on the slow tempo interpretation of the opening movement. Get it if you can. Warner does a poor job of distributing its classical recordings in the U.S. Perhaps you can find it used on amazon or perhaps even a budget rerelease will appear. Don't hold your breath for the latter.

Great performance of Rampal. Magnificent flute concertos definitely. Five concerts of great beauty and virtuosity of the baroque and classic French School for flute. Rampal is undoubtedly a legend of this wonderful instrument and a great rescuer of these fascinating works.

Alison Balsom has been successful since the early 2000s with a standard diet of Baroque trumpet works and the usual Classical-period concertos. In the mid-2010s she turned toward more contemporary repertory with a French conservatory flavor. The results on the trumpet-and-piano Légende, named for the effusive Enescu piece (track five), are impressive; Balsom deepens her art with a coherent program even as she plays mostly music that could be characterized as light. Sample one of the movements of the opening Sonatine of the mightily underrated Jean Françaix, whose understated style, not so much humorous as subtle and elegant, poses challenges for a trumpet confined mostly to its middle register. Balsom's bright, perfectly controlled lines and close ensemble with pianist Tom Poster pass all the tests. After that you get a mix of other neoclassic pieces, the heavier Hindemith Trumpet Sonata in the middle, and popular songs, small chunks all hanging together that stimulate the listener even without awareness of same. Brava.

1997年即以巴托克无伴奏小提琴奏鸣曲(复刻版HMG508334.35)拿下当年度留声机大奖的最佳新人，十年多的时光过去，无数的乐迷依旧为她迷人的丰采吸引，一同见证她一步一步往更高峰的音乐之路迈进∼继获得2010年留声机杂志大奖最佳室内乐专辑的贝多芬小提琴奏鸣曲全集(HMC902025/27)之后，再度让人引颈期盼的巴赫，终于登场。
在巴赫的时代，写给特定乐器的独奏曲目尚未蔚为风潮，然而他的奏鸣曲和组曲却以富有挑战性的技巧与丰沛的创造力，奠定了永恒不朽的地位。佛斯特目前所演奏乐器，是史特拉底瓦裏于1704年所作，素有「睡美人」之称的名琴，由德国巴登符腾堡邦银行所出借使用。

巴赫的无伴奏小提琴奏鸣曲与组曲无疑是西方小提琴音乐的巅峰。这一作品在演奏与作曲技巧上都设立了全新的标準，几个世纪以来也未曾被取代。尽管在十八世纪，人们对于它在艺术领域的重要性众说纷纭，但它非凡的自然特质在当时就已被认同。对于巴赫的第二个儿子、卡尔·菲利普·艾曼纽来说，这些作品代表他父亲在弦乐器惯用处理技巧上的渊博知识，是第一手也是最重要的一份资料，因此也使其成为今后研究的独特素材：“（巴赫）深知如何发挥出所有弦乐器的极限，他的无伴奏小提琴及大提琴作品都能证实这一点。曾经有一位伟大的小提琴家告诉我，能成为一名优秀的小提琴家是最为美妙的事，而无伴奏小提琴曲目则是每一位小提琴学生最好的练习材料”（摘自1774年致福克尔①的一封信）。
另一方面，巴赫的学生肯柏格强调这一作品的成就乃是在于其作曲技巧。在他的专著《纯粹写作的艺术②》的第一部分中，对于二、三部赋格曲作了说明之后，肯伯格继续探讨了无伴奏的器乐作品：“ 即使隻是写作一小段没有任何伴奏的和谐乐句已经很困难，还要加上一个声部且不出错更是难上加难。而且另加的声部很可能毫无乐感且杂乱无章。然而我们却拥有巴赫依照此样式所写的无伴奏小提琴及大提琴作品各六首。”在此过程中，巴赫给自己设定的最大障碍乃是如何以一把隻能演奏出有限和弦或复调的乐器，在不做出任何可察觉让步的情况下，实现他乐句中完整的和声及复调之丰富性，由此将杂音减少到极限。这一点后来也由赖夏特③进一步证实：巴赫对于无伴奏小提琴作品的精通完美体现出他凭借极限的自由与自信、在他给自己设定的锁链中行动自如的高超能力。

The easy way in which Isabelle Faust coaxes the tone from the 1704 Sleeping Beauty Stradivari might alone suggest a performance on period instruments, but the very quality of that tone seems more thoroughly modern, though pure and hardly cluttered with excessive vibrato. The Adagio of the Third Sonata, with its repeated patterns, sounds heavier—droning and even cumbersome—in Faust’s reading; the Fuga—the only fugue in this installment—despite its careful delineation of Bach’s entries and polyphonic lines and the rapidity of its tempo, doesn’t build to the overwhelming kind of climaxes that Nathan Milstein reached in his second set, although her restatement of the subject in bariolage double-stops dances with his energy. Her subtlety in the self-accompanied Largo and her exuberant bravura in the Allegro assai balance the weight of the opening two movements.
The Third Partita opens with a movement that’s often detached and played as a separate concert number. Faust sounds solid and assured—but also brilliantly quicksilver. She points the Loure’s rhythmic masonry even more effectively than did Yuko Shiokawa (Camerata 15081, Fanfare 32:5), and at a faster tempo and incorporating abundant ornamentation. Into the Gavotte en Rondeau, another of the movements from this partita to serve as an independent number, she also (but occasionally) inserts momentum-imparting ornament.
The reverberant acoustic and the close-up miking create an ambiance that enhances Faust’s musical authority (those who decry heavy breathing will encounter some here, albeit generally it’s pretty well absorbed into the violin playing). For Faust’s intellectual energy, for her tonal strength, and for the vibrant individuality of her playing, the compilation deserves a strong, if not an urgent, commendation as one of the most personal and most inventive after Milstein’s.

"Clapton is God!" was the well-known graffiti scrawled across 20th century London, praising the Englishman's fiery guitar playing. Based on Isabelle Faust's blazing accounts of Bach's sonatas and partitas on this 2010 Harmonia Mundi disc, one might expect to see the graffiti "Faust is God!" scrawled across 21st century Paris. Rather than play all six of these canonical works of the solo violin literature, Faust has chosen the D minor and E major partitas and placed the C major Sonata between them. All three are tremendously difficult both technically and expressively, but starting with the D minor Partita with its celebrated Chaconne was particularly audacious. Faust rises to the challenge with an utterly devastating account of the work. Playing with only a dab of vibrato but a boatload of virtuosity, she overcomes every technical hurdle in this surpassingly difficult work. She saves the best for last, and her Chaconne is stunningly powerful, as well as amazingly nuanced and profoundly moving. Her other two performances are equally impressive, especially the opening Adagio and Fugue from the C major Sonata, which builds from a whisper to a shattering contrapuntal climax. There have been other great recordings of these works, but Faust's surely belongs among the best. Harmonia Mundi's sound is close but not overly intimate.
